The Department of Materials and Geosciences at TU Darmstadt seeks to fill the position of a
About TU Darmstadt:
TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We are playing a decisive role in shaping far-reaching processes of global change — from energy transition to artificial intelligence — through outstanding scientific knowledge and innovative academic programmes. We group our cutting-edge research into three fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence, Matter and Materials. We are a university with strong ties to the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region and a very strong international focus. We are committed to European values and European integration.
Context of the professorship in the Department of Materials and Geosciences:
The Institute of Applied Geosciences (IAG) in the Department of Materials and Geosciences at the Technical University of Darmstadt focuses on the key topics Water - Energy - Environment. For these topics, in-depth knowledge of geological principles is a prerequisite, both in teaching and in application-oriented research. Geology is the geoscientific core competence needed for the applied work areas of the institute: sediment geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geothermal energy, and geosystem modeling.
The Professorship of Geology should accordingly convey the geoscientific core competencies and represent research focuses that particularly address the use of the deep subsurface for energy generation or as a storage medium. This results in potential synergies with the other working groups of the institute as well as with the activities of the interdisciplinary research field E+E at TU Darmstadt.
With the corresponding application-oriented research focus of the professorship, the institute is continuing its established applied geoscientific orientation. The environment of a technical university with its proximity to engineering disciplines provides the ideal setting for this.
Your Tasks:
The professorship should represent the subject of geology in research and teaching and establish an internationally visible research group. The research focus of the professorship should further strengthen the profile-giving research topics of the institute and have a focus in the field of geoenergies. To this end, the professorship could focus on the areas of tectonics/structural geology, sedimentary basin development or neighboring research areas with a strong application focus. The willingness to actively participate in TU-internal, national or international collaborative research activities is required. The professorship should also participate in undergraduate teaching in the geosciences and, in particular, take responsibility for introductory geology modules. In addition, courses on the focus areas mentioned above should be offered at bachelor's and master's level. This includes active participation in geoscientific field training, in particular excursions and mapping courses.
A strong willingness to cooperate nationally and internationally and to work in an interdisciplinary manner, both within the department and with other departments and research institutions, is expected.
Your Profile:
We are looking for a proven scientist with a research profile that further strengthens the application-oriented focus of the institute. A completed geoscientific degree followed by a qualified doctorate, additional academic achievements, didactic and pedagogical suitability and the willingness to work in academic self-administration are required.
As part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region, Technical University of Darmstadt and its surroundings are characterized by living internationality. The core element of this is a cosmopolitan climate with functional multilingualism at our university. Therefore, very good English and, at the latest after three years, good German language skills are expected.
We offer:
Technical University of Darmstadt offers varied and challenging assignments, freedom to work independently, the latest technologies, good collaboration between colleagues in partnership, needs-based training opportunities and customised personnel development.
Technical University of Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference.
