DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

FROM 1 OCTOBER 2025: FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK AND CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

CHAIR W2:
"THEORIES AND METHODS OF SOCIAL WORK WITH A FOCUS ON COUNSELLING"

The position is a permanent full-time position.

Knowledge, action, change: each day, these intrinsically linked values inspire us to meet and tackle the societal and technological challenges of our time. As well as providing the specialists and managers of tomorrow with the interdisciplinary knowledge they will need in their future careers, we seek to advance their problem-solving skills and their awareness of their responsibility in and to the world.

With the applied sciences at the heart of all we do, we work hand in hand to create a visionary campus with a positive and enduring effect on Hamburg and the surrounding region.

HAW Hamburg. Because you can make a difference.

YOUR ROLE

  • You will represent the academic and professional foundations of counselling and its application in various fields of social work in teaching, research, and continuing education.
  • A key aspect of this position will be to address the increasing importance of digital support structures and processes, as well as the accessibility and needs-based support for the target groups of social work.
  • A particular focus should be placed on counselling marginalised and vulnerable groups, aiming to help them perceive, assert, and expand their rights.
  • This includes social work research-based engagement with exclusion processes and enabling participation.
  • The professorship will also ensure practical support for students in this field.
  • You will be expected to maintain existing collaborations with social work institutions, for example in the context of securing livelihoods and public welfare services and establishing new partnerships.
  • Networking skills at the intersection of institutions and sectoral policy are desirable.

YOUR PROFILE

  • You hold a relevant degree in Social Work and/or Social or Educational Sciences with a focus on social education/social work, as well as a relevant, high-quality doctorate with a clear connection to the focus of the position.
  • Additional requirements include professional experience in fields of social work, such as social counselling, social security (e.g. homelessness support), or clinical social work, particularly with counselling concepts, as well as academic discussion of counselling concepts and methods.
  • You should have in-depth knowledge of social work theories and expertise in social work methods, with a focus on counselling.
  • A key focus should be on the foundation and analysis of social inequality and exclusion processes.
  • We expect experience in counselling recipients of social work and creating participation opportunities (e.g., in social counselling for people in precarious living situations, such as homelessness or unemployment) as well as in the design and implementation of research projects.
  • Experience in the acquisition of third-party funds is desirable.
  • The degree courses focus on acquiring skills to professionally deal with relevant action requirements in social work.
  • You should demonstrate a competency-based, practice-oriented, and action-focused teaching approach.
  • We expect the ability to effectively connect complex theoretical concepts with practical application scenarios, thereby bridging the gap between academic research and professional practice.
  • You also have the ability and willingness to integrate competence-based learning into teaching, the ability to encourage students to critically reflect on their professional actions, and the willingness to develop and implement cooperative teaching concepts through collegial collaboration.
  • The future Faculty of Social Work and Childhood Education places great importance on internationalisation and therefore expects you to possess a good command of English to teach courses in the international semester.
  • You are distinguished by the ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment, develop new didactic approaches, and enrich teaching using digital technologies.
  • We are looking for a person who will actively contribute to the further development of our faculty and inspire students to engage with global challenges in the field of Social Work.
  • Additionally, we expect collegial communication and teamwork skills, as well as a willingness to actively participate in academic self-administration.

INFORMATION

  • For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.
  • This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.
  • The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.
  • As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president.
  • In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.
  • Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.

OUR OFFER

  • We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university.
  • You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration.
  • Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO RECEIVING YOUR APPLICATION

  • Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring teaching excellence. Candidates are asked to enclose all important documents relating to their teaching experience in their application.
  • In addition, they are requested to include a brief curriculum vitae along with the usual application documents.
  • You can find a form at https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/university/job-openings/
  • We encourage male scientists and experts to apply for this chair. Due to their lower representation they are prior-ranked in case of same suitability, qualification and expertise.
  • You can find more information about HAW Hamburg, equal opportunities measures, data protection, and educational qualifications from outside of Germany, as well as for people with a disability and those with equivalent status, on our job openings information page.
