Supplier Industrialization Engineer, Tooling (m/w/d) - Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg
Tesla’s Supplier Industrialization team is responsible for component development, part and process qualification activities, quality management, and continuous improvement activities at suppliers. The job requires effective communication at all levels both with internal and external teams, traveling to suppliers in different regions, and on-the-spot critical decision making. The goal: developing suppliers by teaching best practices for manufacturing, quality, and engineering, delivering on time quantities of high quality component parts into Tesla’s production processes to enable extremely rapid development cycles and product launches, driving lean manufacturing principles to reduce waste and improve quality.
We are looking for a highly skilled Supplier Industrialization Tooling Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing injection tool feasibility analyses, evaluating the building strategy of tools, and conducting comprehensive cost breakdowns. This role requires a deep understanding of tooling processes and the ability to quantify execution times for each task involved in tool construction.

What You’ll Do
- Plan, organize, direct and conduct industrialization related activities within the supply chain team. Develop, Manage, Audit, Improve and Correct supplier planning and execution of component manufacturing and assembly techniques and quality control processes from the advanced development phase to mass production qualification.
- Provide leadership for New Product Introduction (NPI) at Suppliers.
- Lead supplier improvements in scalability, cost, and quality.
- Facilitate communication and clarification of technical requirements between Suppliers and Tesla Purchasing, Quality, and Design teams.
- Accountable for supplier audits to ensure their ability to meet part performance, delivery, and reliability expectations.
- Collaborate with Tesla Design, Quality, and Manufacturing to determine the ideal performance specifications and supplier metrics.
- Lead feasibility analysis for injection molding tools, ensuring alignment with project specifications and manufacturing capabilities.
- Perform detailed cost breakdowns of injection tools by analyzing material, labor, and overhead costs, providing insights for cost-effective tool designs.
- Evaluate and recommend tool-building strategies, ensuring optimal resource allocation and minimizing lead time without compromising on quality.
- Quantify execution time for each stage of tool development, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements.
- Collaborate closely with product development, manufacturing, and procurement teams to ensure seamless integration of tooling solutions within project timelines.
- Support vendor selection and management by providing technical insights on tooling capabilities and cost efficiencies.
- Utilize CAD and simulation tools to validate design concepts and ensure manufacturability.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in injection molding techniques and tooling technologies.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in injection molding tooling or a related industry.
- Strong understanding of injection molding processes, tool design, and manufacturing techniques.
- Proven experience in conducting cost breakdowns and feasibility analyses for tooling projects.
- Proficiency in CAD software and tooling simulation tools.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various teams and stakeholders.
- Experience in Quality Systems a plus: PPAP/APQP processes.
- Advanced working knowledge of production processes, material flow, lean manufacturing principles, automation, gauging, tooling, and manufacturing engineering.
- Ability to define and execute a project using project management techniques.
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment. Excellent team building skills in dealing with suppliers, peers and other functional areas.
- Ability to support on problem resolution at different stages of the manufacturing processes (raw materials, lamination, etc. - including Tier2 discussion).
- Experience in the design, development, manufacture of interior surface materials ie textiles, leathers etc.
- Process experience of interior parts such as sewing, lamination, backfolding, back injection moulding, glue & welding application.
- Strong technical writing ability and an ability to explain complex issues in a concise and plain manner.
- Must be familiar with SPC and data analysis.
- An average of 40-50% travel, possibly on short notice.
