Our Profile

The Component Safety Research Group at the Institute of Forming Technology (IBF) investigates material performance and safety across several engineering applications. Using a combination of experiments and numerical analyses, the group develops numerical models to characterize the material behavior integrating the latest advances in steel production into structural applications. We are seeking a highly motivated Student Assistant to join our team in the development of material models using finite element methods (FEM).

Your Profile

Required Qualifications:

• Student of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in solid mechanics.
• Strong skills in Python or a similar programming language.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of material mechanics with a focus on plasticity and damage mechanics.
• Experience in modeling using Abaqus software.
• Experience in mechanical testing and microstructural analysis.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on material models.
• Support in the development and optimization of simulation tools and algorithms (Python, Fortran).
• Support in the preparation, execution, and evaluation of experiments.
• Assist with technical drawings using CAD.
• Preparation of reports and presentations as well as literature research.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed as a student assistant. The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of one year. Further employment is intended. This is a part-time contract position with standard weekly hours of 8 hours. The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants, corresponding to a pay grade of 13,25 € per hour.
