We are committed to publishing the best open access journals in our portfolio of over 250 titles and we strive to drive progress in biology, health sciences and medicine.

About the role

The BMC Academic Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

We are seeking a Senior Publisher to support a portfolio of open access journals in our division that includes journals in the life sciences, biomedical sciences, and health sciences. Reporting to an Executive Publisher you will work across the portfolio and be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing editorial and content development for newly launched and growth opportunity journals in coordination with the established publishing editor. You will liaise with internal staff, external journal editors, and the scientific community.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic acquisition plans to attract high-quality content for newly launched and selected priority journals across the portfolio in collaboration with the assigned publishing editor.
  • Contribute to journal development planning and oversee the implementation and management of these plans, including commissioning, editorial board engagement, and other outreach.
  • Gather, evaluate, and synthesize information from diverse sources to support data-driven decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Review new journal and commercial opportunities and contribute to the development of proposals for new launches, relaunches, or scope expansion.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and training of Editors-in-Chief, handling Editors, and other Editorial Board Members for selected journals.
  • Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed.
  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues in strategy, operations, PP&I, production, and other departments.
  • Attend external meetings (in-person or virtual) to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs, society partners, and the wider research community.
  • Understand the trends and changes in the communities you serve and translate these into proposals for successful (new) products and services.
  • Take part in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces and working groups.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study (life, health or biomedical sciences).
  • Previous content and journal development experience in academic publishing is a must.
  • Adept at gathering, evaluating, and synthesizing information from diverse sources to support data-driven decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining productive and friendly relations/partnerships with academic and industry-based researchers.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; including proven ability to take ownership to drive and complete tasks, to consistently meet deadlines, and to adapt quickly to change.
  • Positive, resourceful and proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, showcasing diplomacy and assertiveness.
  • Ability to work independently and to cooperate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.

To apply, please include:

  • A CV which should include a brief account of your accomplishments.
  • A cover letter explaining your interest in the post and relevant experience.
