Research Specialist in 6G & Env Sustainability

Job Description

Nokia Standards is responsible for research and standardization activities to shape standards and industry specifications in line with Nokia strategy & vision. Main goal is creating leading innovations in collaboration with internal and external experts to advance the technology landscape as well as to protect Intellectual Property (SEPs & SIPs).

Within the Nokia Standards organization, the Sustainability Research & Standardization team is made up of sustainability researchers and standardization delegates who are working on the near-to-mid-term Environmental Social Governance (ESG) aspects of emerging communication technologies that are being standardized in international standardization organizations, as well as internal and external sustainability research projects.

The team in part, focuses on environmental assessment methodological standardization and standardization related research in the following areas:

1. Climate change, biodiversity and overall environmental impact (incl LCA)
2. Circularity
3. Handprint / ICT enabling effect

In addition, the team focuses also on sustainability technology research to address:

1. The challenges in developing and operating an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable Internet
2. 6G Sustainability by design
3. Value-oriented design of telecommunications systems
4. Creation of frameworks to link sustainability requirements to technology enabler

Responsibilities

We are currently looking to strengthen our team with a Research/Standardization Engineer/Specialist. As a member of a high-performing standardization & research team, you will create and develop concepts, frameworks, and studies for standardization forums related to telecommunications. Moreover, you will form Nokia position on proposals in standardization and/or industry associations together with Nokia experts in the area.

In collaboration with the team, you would conduct technology feasibility studies and deep-dives on emerging topics and develop associated written contributions to standards organizations as well as research publications. You could possibly also take the lead to establish research projects in new domains relevant to the team.

Being at the forefront of state-of-the-art technology research related to sustainable ICTs and ICTs for sustainability would be part of your remit. Coverage of the social and economic sustainability aspects of our technology as well as environmental sustainability will be essential.

As part of the team, you will:

• Participate in internal and external research projects related to technical specialization areas that are relevant for targeted standards and emerging technology domains, with a view to creating assessment methodologies for standards, differentiating technology solutions, robust intellectual property assets and relevant publications. Potentially participating in external standardization meetings as a Nokia standardization delegate.
• Support internal customer, marketing, corporate functions as well as government relations teams on the specialization areas as necessary.
• Scout for new and emerging research and standardization topics that will grow the standardization landscape you are active in.
• Collaborate with social, economic, environmental and systems science, policy and regulation experts to develop holistic research perspectives on sustainability impacts of our technology in these domains.

Qualifications

• You are passionate about sustainability, preferably with an initial experience working in sustainable technology development and operations.
• You have a MSc, and preferably a PhD, in relevant area, e.g., environmental, electrical engineering, materials, computer science, mathematics.
• You have good understanding of telecommunication network architectures and design, preferably including end-to-end system level knowledge of mobile networks and Internet infrastructure and protocols.
• Ideally, you have also general understanding of the work done in standardization and/or industry associations, preferably with experience in 3GPP or IETF standardization and research activities.
• You have innovative and analytical mindset.
• You communicate fluently in English, both in speaking and writing.
• In standardization delegate role, you need to communicate fluently in German if you are based in Germany, in French if you are based in France.
• Previous publications and innovations in the expertise area would be an advantage.
• You are able to work efficiently both independently and as part of an international virtual team.
• Excellent communication, presentation, collaboration and technical writing skills.
