Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)

As the German National Library of Science and Technology our future-oriented services ensure the infrastructural requirements for a high-quality supply of information and literature for research in science and industry. With the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), we are working to revolutionise the exchange and use of scientific knowledge in the digital age.

As part of the BMBF project SCINEXT - Neural-Symbolic Scholarly Innovation Extraction, we are developing AI techniques for crowdsourcing, representing and managing semantically structured, rich representations of scholarly contributions and research data in knowledge graphs and thus develop a novel model for scholarly communication.

As part of this project, the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology - Program Area D, Open Research Knowledge Graph, is looking to employ a

Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)

to work in the Research Group SciNEXT at the earliest possible date.

The position is initially limited until 31st July 2025. The regular weekly working time is 39.80 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. Provided that the personal requirements are met, the remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your tasks include

• Developing and maintaining Python scripts to interface with scholarly article repository APIs.
• Employing NLP and ML libraries to analyze and interpret data from scientific articles.
• Managing database operations for efficient data storage and retrieval of scientific article data.
• Collaborating with research teams to facilitate data analysis and contribute to publication efforts.

Your profile

• You have successfully completed a university degree in computer science or a related field or, alternatively, at least two years of relevant professional experience as a Research Software Engineer.
• Extensive experience in software development with Python and connecting APIs.
• Experience with agile development methods and DevOps tools such as Ansible and GitLab CI/CD.
• Proven experience in developing or participating in open source software projects.
• You are familiar with Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) libraries.
• You possess experience with database management.
• Demonstrated the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.
• Strong communication and cooperation skills.
• Very good written and spoken English.

Desirable additions to your profile

• Experience with standardized metadata schemas.
• Experience in software development with Java and React.
• A good feel for designing user-friendly applications.
• Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not essential.
