Jobbeschreibung

In a joint appointment procedure of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (AUF) and the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN), the following position is to be filled as soon as possible in accordance with the Thuringian model:

W2 Professorship in "Molecular Physiology of Ruminants"

associated with leading a Focus Topic and a research group at FBN.

We are looking for a scientifically distinguished individual who is well established in ruminant research and complements the animal sciences at AUF as well as the research groups at FBN. The future post holder will take over the lead and further development of the Focus Topic 'Individualising Farm Animal Husbandry' at the FBN. This interdisciplinary initiative brings together 15 working groups of the FBN consisting of geneticists, physiologists, and ethologists to explore the individual adaptive repertoires that impact animal health and welfare, as well as the efficiency of energy and nutrient utilization. Research in this Focus Topic considers intrinsic factors as well as exogenous influences such as climate, feeding regimes, and social interactions. The goal is to understand individuality from the genome to the phenotype and to explore the underlying genetic, physiological, and ethological mechanisms. Based on these insights, we aim to derive valid indicators and develop smart solutions to improve animal welfare, health, and efficiency.

The future incumbent will lead and conduct innovative research projects with a dedicated research group at the FBN to investigate the relationship between genotype and phenotype in in vivo and in vitro models of ruminants, integrating holistic and specific analyses from the genome to the phenotype of the organism in order to deepen the understanding of biological systems in ruminants. The aim is to address current and future challenges in the field of ruminant research and husbandry.

The future holder of the position will teach the basics of physiological and molecular mechanisms of trait expression in ruminants and the application of the latest "omics" technologies in research and modern livestock farming (2 SWS in total) in the Bachelor's programme in Agricultural Sciences and the Master's programme in Sustainable Agricultural Systems at the AUF. The future post holder is also expected to contribute his/her research expertise to the work of the Interdisciplinary Faculty of the University of Rostock (INF) and its departments.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. a university degree in agricultural, animal or veterinary sciences,
  2. a habilitation in the field of livestock genetics and genomics or equivalent scientific achievements demonstrating appropriate expertise,
  3. a research profile and expertise in genotype-to-phenotype research and in the development and use of in vitro model systems for functional genome annotation, as evidenced by publications and third-party funding,
  4. a very good network and presence in the national and international ruminant research environment,
  5. a high level of commitment, ambition and experience in the acquisition of external funding and publication activities,
  6. experience in training students, supervising doctoral, master and bachelor theses and leading interdisciplinary research teams,
  7. the ability to develop an interdisciplinary research direction with innovation, high personal commitment and organisational skills,
  8. very good knowledge of German and English or willingness to acquire German language skills in the near future.
