The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research GmbH (HZI), Germany's largest non-university infection research center, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists are developing new methods and strategies to fight infectious diseases faster and more effectively. Together with the Leibniz Universität Hannover, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Georg August University Göttingen, and University Hospital Göttingen, HZI is a member of CAIMed consortium. CAIMed offers positions for doctoral students, postdocs and professors who want to conduct research and develop innovative methods at the interface between AI and personalized medicine at our locations in Lower Saxony. In international teams, HZI conducts cutting-edge research for improved personalized healthcare of widespread diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and infections.
Technische Universität Braunschweig is one of Germany’s leading institutes of technology and offers an inspiring work environment with a wide range of research and teaching opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities. The 3,800 members of our academic, technical and administrative staff – including more than 400 international scientific staff – work together to ensure that our university successfully fulfils its mission of providing excellent teaching for our approximately 16,000 students and 100 trainees.
In your role as a CAIMed group leader, you will work at the HZI site in Braunschweig. The group is associated with the Department of Systems Immunology, a dynamic and interactive group of interdisciplinary researchers from physics, mathematics, bioinformatics, engineering, systems theory, and biology. The position comprises independent research possibilities, leading your own scientific team, developing your own research, and the option to pursue a long-term academic career. The position at HZI is associated with a W2 professorship at the Technische Universität Braunschweig according to the “Jülicher Modell” and will be co-mentored by Prof. Matthias Müller from the Leibniz University Hannover. The position is initially limited to 5 years. After a successful evaluation of the CAIMed project, confirming continued funding, an extension of the position for another 5 years is planned and a permanent appointment of the professorship will be sought based on demonstrated excellence in research and teaching.
Your role is to develop and lead your research group within the CAIMed consortium. The group will develop mathematical models to tackle medical research questions. Interactions between organs and physiological systems in the body play an important role in a variety of diseases, yet they are often insufficiently understood. This is particularly the case in the field of immune responses to infections and autoimmunity. The goal is to develop models that describe different functional systems and their interactions in multicompartment and multiscale models. Together with clinical and machine learning experts, you will work towards employing these models in the context of clinical research questions and patient data to develop new and optimize existing therapies.
A PhD in a quantitative field such as physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering and a proven track-record of research excellence in mathematical modelling of biological systems.
