About us

The Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine (IHEM) is part of the School of Medicine and Health at the Technical University of Munich. At the Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine, we advance ethical practice and theory in medicine, biomedical technology, and public health, driven by the belief that embedding ethics is essential for shaping the future of healthcare, science, technology, society, and the environment.

Our mission encompasses both theoretical and empirical methods to foster ethical, transparent, and interdisciplinary research, education and policy. The Institute works on an interdisciplinary basis and is highly networked both nationally and internationally.

About the position

For the research project "Advancing health data justice: A comparative study of health-related data governance in Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom" (ADJUST), we are looking for a 100% postdoctoral research associate (TVöL-13) beginning as soon as possible in 2025, for a term of three years.

The project will develop and apply the idea of "health data justice", which is an approach to controlling who gets to access and use health-related data that specifically focuses on the needs of marginalized communities.

Marginalized communities are those who have faced historical disadvantage and continue to experience many challenges accessing safe, high-quality health and social care. Recent advances in technologies that need large amounts of health-related data to be built, such as health-focused artificial intelligence (AI), make it more urgent and important to ensure that uses of health-related data are in the best interests of marginalized communities.

The project will explore policies, conduct interviews, and engage communities in three countries: Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Comparing across these countries will make it possible to build new insights on health data justice. This position will conduct the empirical research for the German team, including health policy analysis, interviews with marginalized communities, and refining the health data justice framework within the German context.

Requirements:

  • Candidates should have a university degree/doctorate in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, bioethics, STS, or a related social science discipline and experience in conducting and publishing research at an international level.
  • Experience with qualitative empirical methods is necessary. Applicants should have demonstrated experience in designing, carrying out, and analyzing qualitative research (specifically, interviews and focus groups). Experience working in the area of digital health and justice is an advantage.
  • Experience conducting policy reviews, particularly in the area of health policy, is an advantage.
  • All applicants must have strong analytical skills and a proven interest in interdisciplinary and teamwork.
  • Fluency in German and English is essential. The research study will be conducted in German; applicants will be expected to write and publish in English, and collaborate regularly with project partners in Canada and the UK in English.

We offer:

  • An excellent international, collaborative research environment at one of Europe's leading academic institutions with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Employment and remuneration according to the provisions of the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states up to TV-L E13, plus the attractive benefits of the public service such as capital-forming benefits and company pension scheme.

The Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the Technical University of Munich strives for a safe, inclusive, and collaborative working environment. We foster a culture in which everyone feels valued and heard and in which the personal development and well-being of the individual in the group are central.
