At the University of Göttingen -Public Law Foundation-, Centre for Modern Indian Studies, there is a position as

Postdoctoral Fellow in the Research Cluster State and Democracy in Modern India

to be filled. Starting date is April 1, 2025. The position is limited to March 31, 2027.

The position is part of a new multi-year research project led by Prof. Srirupa Roy on “Diaspora Politics and the International Mainstreaming of National Populism.”

Terms and scope

The starting date is April 1, 2025. Regular working hours will be 39.8 per week. Remuneration will be according to the E13 TV-L (the German public sector pay scale, commensurate with experience). The position is limited to 2 years. For the successful candidate a later start date of October 1, 2025 may be considered.

Funded by an Open Research Area (8th Call) award from the DFG-ANR-SSHRC-ESRC consortium, the project studies the soft power strategies and diaspora outreach of India, Israel, and/or Turkey. Postdoctoral researchers will focus on one of the following sub-themes:

1. A comparative study of India, Israel, and/or Turkey’s soft power and public diplomacy strategies. Topics might include diaspora outreach; lobbying of national governments, political parties, and international institutions; engaging business, civil society, media, think tanks, universities;
2. A comparative study of national populist mobilization and host society integration experiences of Indian and Turkish diasporas in Germany.

Tasks include:

Conducting original research and writing (and submission) of publications on project themes; liaising with the international research team; organizing international workshops and presentations at conferences.

Application requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science, International Relations, Anthropology, Sociology, or allied fields. Applicants from all countries are encouraged to apply. Proficiency in English and the primary research language is required.
