Postdoc (f/m/d)

to promote their own academic qualifications within the meaning of Section 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) as soon as possible.

Your tasks

Your job tasks include:

• Focusing on advanced mathematical research and algorithmic development, contributing to the group’s work in areas such as data assimilation, machine learning, and causal inference, with applications in climate science and biomedical challenges.
• Publishing findings in prestigious journals, including those in the SIAM series.
• Contributing to teaching within the Institute of Mathematics, delivering approximately four semester hours per week, including teaching in the newly developed Bachelor's and Master's programs in Data Science and supporting the Data Science Lab, where you mentor PhD students.
• Assisting in supervising theses and actively engaging in academic self-governance.
• Presenting research at national and international conferences, workshops, and meetings, and collaborating with international partners during short stays abroad (1–6 months).
• Applying for and securing third-party funding to support your and the lab’s research activities.

Your profile

For being part of the selection process, the following is needed:

• A completed university degree and a PhD in mathematics, computer science with a mathematical focus, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
• Strong expertise in data assimilation, particularly in particle filtering, as well as in data science, machine learning, and statistics, evidenced by outstanding theses or successfully completed coursework in these areas.
• Solid knowledge of the Mathematics of Data Science, relevant to both research and teaching.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Proficient programming skills, especially in Python and MATLAB.

The following competences are desirable:

• A high level of commitment, enthusiasm, initiative, an independent working style, and strong teamwork abilities.
• Teaching experience.

In principle, the job is also suitable for part-time employment. The extent to which a part-time request can be granted, particularly regarding the location and scope of part-time work, will be examined based on the needs of the service.
