Department 10.6 - Sustainable building management

Job ID: V000009202

Place of work: Aachen

Fixed term: Permanent

Job evaluation: EG 10

Working hours: full-time or part-time

Published: 25.02.2025

Application deadline: 31.03.2025

Job type: Technical and administrative staff

Our profile

Department 10.0 - Facility Management manages a usable area of around 498,000 square meters with around 400 employees in six departments. This includes almost all services relating to property management, commercial building management, structural maintenance and expansion, project coordination, space management, building, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Department 10.6 - Sustainable Facility Management is responsible for the technical and operational orientation of RWTH Aachen University's operations to achieve a climate-neutral university. This includes the hardware and software implementation, operation, further planning and expansion of a university-wide Energy Data Management System (EDMS) to support RWTH's ISO 50001 certification.

To this end, Department 10.62 Energy Data and Project Management is putting together an interdisciplinary team of HVAC, IT and electrical specialists and project managers. Together, we will link and analyze data from currently over 1700 energy meters, as well as other sources such as solar systems, building management systems and CAFM systems, and make them available for further use. We provide the university with the basis for data-driven decisions to reduce energy consumption and thus actively contribute to the university's sustainability strategy. We are looking for you as an IT specialist.

Your profile

  • You have a successfully completed university degree (Bachelor's or comparable), ideally in the field of applied computer science, software development, engineering or a comparable subject.
  • You have several years of professional experience, ideally in the field of IT infrastructure (networks, firewalls and IT security) as well as in the field of software development and operation (with service providers), but at least have a solid basic understanding and openness for both areas.
  • You are confident in the use of relevant programming, software development and database management tools, in particular those mentioned in the following task list.
  • You are also able and open to familiarizing yourself quickly and independently with new software solutions (e.g. frameworks).
  • Characteristics such as the ability to work in a team, a sense of responsibility, reliability and resilience are a matter of course for you. You resolve conflicts and stressful situations objectively and constructively. You have very good verbal and written communication skills (German/English).
  • You are willing to undergo continuous further training and adapt to new technologies and requirements.

Your tasks

  • Your role will focus on setting up and operating the software solutions and IT infrastructure (on-premises + cloud) operated and managed by Department 10.6. You will work closely with internal partners (especially the RWTH Aachen University IT Center) and external service providers.
  • Setting up IT infrastructure: You will support your colleagues on the IT side with the connection of the currently 1700 energy meters and will be responsible for identifying and eliminating the causes of errors (e.g. data failures / incorrect values).
  • IT infrastructure operation: You will be responsible for configuring wireless networks (LoRaWAN), virtual networks (VLANs), network routes and connections (e.g. for the department's field devices). You will take care of the operation and maintenance of virtual machines, cloud services and databases. You will ensure smooth operation and IT security. To ensure network security, you will be responsible for firewall management (administration and adaptation of firewall rules), keeping the systems up to date and closing newly identified security gaps.
  • Software development: Together with the other team members in the department and external IT service providers, you will introduce new software and hardware for energy data management. You take care of the backend and are responsible for ensuring smooth collaboration between the front and backend. You will also integrate new interfaces and data sources such as solar plants, CAFM and SAP data into the system. You will help develop the database and the underlying entity-relationship model in line with requirements.
  • Software operation: You will also continue to develop the energy data management system in the medium and long term, acting as a knowledge carrier and contact person for colleagues and customers (e.g. institutes). You will create automated reports, dashboards and KPIs using modern front-ends. You will work together with other university departments such as the Sustainability and University Governance unit or institutes. Depending on the scope and ability, you will either implement tasks yourself or together with external developers/service providers.
  • Your software and technology stack: CISCO networks, Python, noSQL (postgreSQL, Timescale, Oracle), Visual Studio Code, GitLab, Github, (RESTful) APIs, GIS systems, OpenVPN, all common MS Office programs (incl. Access and Project), protocol gateways (LoRaWAN, M-Bus, MQTT, BACNet, Modbus RTU/TCP, GSM) and MSR technology (e.g. DDCs / GLTs).
