FACULTY OF BUSINESS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
DEPARTMENT OF NURSING AND MANAGEMENT
FROM 1 OCTOBER 2025: FACULTY OF HEALTH
The post is permanent and full-time.
Knowledge, action, change: each day, these intrinsically linked values inspire us to meet and tackle the societal and technological challenges of our time. As well as providing the specialists and managers of tomorrow with the interdisciplinary knowledge they will need in their future careers, we seek to advance their problem-solving skills and their awareness of their responsibility in and to the world.
With the applied sciences at the heart of all we do, we work hand in hand to create a visionary campus with a positive and enduring effect on Hamburg and the surrounding region.
HAW Hamburg. Because you can make a difference.
As a professor, you will be a representative for the subjects of Politics and Economics with a specific relevance or direct application to healthcare, especially in the cooperative courses of study to be offered by the future Faculty of Health (Midwifery and Nursing), previously known as the Department of Nursing and Management. This field encompasses all subject matter that addresses political and economic structures and processes within the healthcare system, its institutions, and actors in the fields of nursing and midwifery. In this context, the level of service provision and financing is just as important as the perspectives of individual persons and the public health perspective.
You will pursue an active role in research in order to contribute to the development of German nursing and midwifery studies in particular – a field that is still in its early stages – and of healthcare in general, with contents and university teaching in the aforementioned areas.
Generally speaking, cooperation in the areas of teaching and research within the future Faculty of Health and with the future Faculty of Social Work and Childhood Education is both provided for and encouraged. Plans are in place to expand our existing national and international teaching and research cooperation projects.
In addition to the respective subject-specific requirements, all applicants are expected:
You will also be required to assume responsibility within the university’s self-governance bodies and functions.
You should have a university degree in Economics, Social Sciences or Political Sciences, with an explicit focus and/or a clear current relevance to healthcare.
You should demonstrate a particular aptitude for scientific work, documented in the form of a doctorate in the field of health policy or health economics, or whose content is closely healthcare-related.
The teaching will primarily take place in modules on health policy and/or health economics. Accordingly, in addition to a pertinent degree, professional experience in (international) companies and/or organisations related to the field is required. In addition, a corresponding choice of scientific focus is expected, ideally in the fields of nursing and/or midwifery.
This field of teaching and research represents an essential cross-sectional discipline of health-related courses of study, which requires a broad knowledge of and interest in the relevant health-related fields of work.
You should have research experience relevant to the job profile; this is associated with a focus on the further development of research projects and the acquisition of third-party funding. You should be able to demonstrate your research experience by means of relevant published works, as well as experience in third-party funding and from the management/implementation of your own projects.
Teaching experience gained through your own academic teaching in the subjects and/or fields is beneficial. You will prove your university teaching skills by holding a trial lecture.
We value diversity and welcome all applications – regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic or social origin, religion, disability, age, appearance and sexual orientation. In order for us to consider international applicants, B2-level German language skills are expected.
We expect you to have in-depth English language skills as these will be required for English-language teaching and the establishment of corresponding cooperative projects within international set-ups. You will be required to demonstrate these skills by holding a lecture in English.
Good cooperation skills, communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team are also advantageous for the role of the professorship.
In particular, knowledge in the context of e-health and experience with online teaching and AI in science and research is expected. Experience with cooperative interdisciplinary research projects and relationships with the relevant professional societies in the field are beneficial. Cooperative projects with healthcare providers or funding sources, their associations, and/or health policy actors will be helpful, as will corresponding experience in an international context.
The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences has set the goal of a gender-equal, discrimination-conscious university culture that is sensitive to diversity. These criteria therefore have a special weighting in our job interviews with regard to their application in teaching and research.
For appointment as a professor, as well as the general staff requirements, the appointment requirements in accordance with Section 15 Para. 1-6 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG) also apply. These can be read on our website.
This includes the willingness to participate in the self-administration committees of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences as well as a choice of residence in proximity to the university.
The denomination of the vacant post is under the caveat of assessment at appropriate intervals in accordance with Section 12 Para 7 HmbHG.
As well as the basic salary of grade W2 and basic performance benefits, a provision of appointment performance benefits is also possible which can be negotiated with the university president. In addition, there is also the possibility of granting a bonus from third-party funds.
Candidates who have not yet reached the age of 50 at the time of appointment may be appointed as tenured officials, otherwise the employment relationship is that of a standard employee.
We offer you challenging work in an open-minded, forward-thinking university. You will be integrated into a team who enjoy your participation and are happy to support you in the early stages of your integration. Your workplace is centrally located and has very good public transport links.
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring teaching excellence. Candidates are asked to enclose all important documents relating to their teaching experience in their application. In addition, they are requested to include a brief curriculum vitae along with the usual application documents. You can find a form at https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/university/job-openings/
