THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate for the newly established "SEASCAPES" project, funded by the Leibniz Association. The project is an interdisciplinary cluster, led by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) in cooperation with the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA) and the Universities of Kiel and Rostock.

The PhD student will gain insight into various aspects of the research on the newly discovered submerged stone structure 'Blinkerwall', as well as other submerged sites in the southern Baltic Sea. While other PhD students in the project will focus on e.g. geoscientific topographical and stratigraphical surveys in the vicinity of these features, the applicant from Rostock University will participate in and support the underwater archaeological on-site excavations and carry out their analysis.

The applicant will thereby work in a team of highly skilled researchers and with other PhD students on one of the most exciting discoveries of the year 2024 (Archaeology magazine).

  • Co-planning and management of test archaeological excavations in the first phase of the project at several submerged sites relevant to the project and their analysis with the aim of obtaining a scientific qualification (PhD).
  • Laboratory work, analysis of artefacts (primary lithic remains and possible initial sorting of organic residues).
  • Complementary research to validate the anthropogenic origin of the documented stone structures and to investigate the hypothesis of their function as hunting architecture.
  • Evaluation and synthesis of the available data.
  • Interpretation of relevant stratigraphies and sampling for external analysis.
  • Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Active member of the SEASCAPES research team.

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

  • Completed scientific university studies (Master's degree, diploma or comparable degree) in the fields of prehistoric archaeology or geoarchaeology with at least good results.
  • Good knowledge of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene societies in northern Europe.
  • European Scientific Diver certificate (ESD) or equivalence certificate (e. g. AAUS or CAUS).
  • Experienced at underwater excavations.
  • Experience (at best) and willingness to co-lead underwater fieldwork.
  • Experience in the analysis of lithic remains.
  • Good written and spoken English, knowledge of German an advantage.
  • Minimum physical fitness for year-round fieldwork.
  • Willingness to work seriously and with commitment on a project for your own scientific qualification (PhD).
  • Strict adherence to deadlines, strong communication skills in presenting research results and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team.
