GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. We are looking for a candidate for the department Accelerator Control Systems (ACO), which is currently responsible for the control system of both existing and future accelerator facilities, with about 65 hardware and software developers, as well as national and international partners, to start as soon as possible.

Your position involves the planning, installation, and maintenance of a network for real-time control applications based on Synchronous Ethernet and the White Rabbit extension of the Precision Time Protocol IEEE 1588. The focus is on the central real-time control for all accelerator facilities at GSI and FAIR.Your tasks:

• Management and administration of the network for timing and real-time control of the particle accelerator. This includes the existing part of the GSI facility as well as the developing network of the FAIR accelerator.
• Network monitoring, analysis, and resolution of network issues.
• Design, planning, and commissioning of the network for timing and real-time control of the future FAIR buildings with approximately 3,000 endpoints and the associated switches.
• Management of related network services (DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, etc.) and their servers.
• Advising and supporting developers and users on network and time synchronization topics, as well as reviewing and implementing user requirements.
• Technical coordination with other network teams and mutual support.
• Creation and maintenance of system documentation.
• Development and maintenance of specialized automation and monitoring tools.
  
  

Mandatory requirements for your profile:

• Good knowledge of OSI Layer2/Layer3, network infrastructure, administration and security of complex IT networks, and the installation and configuration of switches.
• Good Linux knowledge.
• Good command of both English and German languages, written and spoken.
• Independent, structured work with good teamwork and communication skills, and a strong service orientation.
• Willingness to participate in on-call duty.
  
  

Beneficial knowledge:

• Detailed knowledge of network protocols and base services (Ethernet, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, etc.), switching, and routing.
• Good knowledge of network management tools, ideally FNT Command.
• Good knowledge in monitoring solutions, ideally Icinga and NetDisco.
• Good knowledge of programming in Python and Shell script for automation and monitoring.
• Knowledge of the IEEE 1588 timing protocol.
• Experience with version control of source code, ideally with Git.
