Job description:

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is one of the world's largest research projects, built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to conducting world-class science.

The department “Control Systems” (ACO) presently employs about 65 hardware and software developers and is responsible for the design and implementation of the control system for the existing and future FAIR accelerator facilities.

We are now inviting qualified candidates to apply for the following position:

Database Engineer (m/f/d) (Oracle),
Computer Science (Master of Science / Diploma) or compatible qualification
Posting ID: 25.27-6210

You will be working in a team of software developers responsible for controls software for the accelerator complex. Your tasks include database engineering for the central data store of the control system for the future FAIR facility (www.fair-center.eu). This comprises requirements engineering, conceptual work and design, performance optimization, implementation, testing, and maintenance.

Your main task is the maintenance and further development of the database for the settings management of the accelerator complex, which represents the underlying data of a framework for modelling accelerators being developed in collaboration with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) (www.cern.ch). You will act as the link between the team for the technical provision of the databases, the collaboration partners at CERN, and the development team of the framework.

You will monitor the performance of the running database accesses and realize optimizations with colleagues and in agreement with the collaboration partners. You should be willing to work within the CERN database group for a limited period of time to establish contact with collaboration partners and build a deeper understanding of the joint database development.

You will develop and implement a concept for testing the performance of the database accesses, utilizing automation effectively. Currently, we are evaluating the administration of test databases using containers, and you will contribute to this evaluation using your expertise.

You will enrich the team by bringing your own ideas to the overall concept. You should demonstrate an independent and target-oriented working style and act as a competent contact person for internal customers and colleagues. You will determine the requirements regarding the database based on current and future usage scenarios in consultation with stakeholders, providing input for the setup of the future database system for FAIR. You will also support the commissioning and operation of the accelerators, including participation in regular on-call duty.

You should have a passion for database engineering, and the involvement in developing a complex control system for operating particle accelerators should be a challenge you welcome.

Required professional skills:

  • Strong knowledge and experience in database engineering, database development, data model design, and database optimization
  • Strong knowledge of Oracle database technology
  • Strong knowledge in performance measurement of currently running database accesses and their optimization
  • Strong knowledge in SQL and PL/SQL
  • Good knowledge in (Spring-)JDBC and appropriate knowledge of Java
  • Experience with Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) is beneficial
  • Experience with further database access technologies (e.g., OR-mappers) and database versioning tools (e.g., Liquibase) is a plus
  • Experience with containerization (e.g., Kubernetes) is beneficial
  • Basic experience with Linux is a plus
  • Very good writing and communication skills in German and English

Required personal skills:

  • Excellent team skills, with a focus on a common goal
  • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to explain own ideas and concepts clearly in the international context of collaboration with CERN
    • Determination of business requirements together with internal customers
    • Positive contributions to discussions and a common understanding
  • Methodical, self-dependent, goal- and quality-oriented.
  • Independent work style, ownership of products, and a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service.

To apply successfully, you must have completed university studies attested by a degree in Master of Computer Science or a comparable qualification and fulfill the required skills.

As part of the FAIR project, large parts of the control system are to be developed and put into operation in the coming years. With the possibility to incorporate and further develop your own ideas, you will actively contribute to the database landscape.

We offer you a versatile, varied, and challenging job in a well-equipped workplace with interesting and diverse tasks. Teamwork and the willingness to undergo further training are essential for us. GSI also offers various options for balancing family and career, partially mobile working, company health management services, company social counseling services, personal training and qualification opportunities, a job ticket, supplementary pension benefits, additional company leisure time, and a company sports club "Schnelle Ionen".

This position is permanent. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).

GSI supports the vocational development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.

Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.

Further information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu.

If you find this position interesting and challenging and would like to work in an exceptional, international, strongly technical environment, please send your full application documents, including the desired salary, with information on your earliest possible starting date, quoting the above posting number 25.27-6210 by 19.03.2025 at the latest via the online portal on our job site:
