About the Role
As a member of the team, the Associate Editor will maintain the visibility, scientific standing and quality of Nature Cities. Editors work on all aspects of the journal and will have an opportunity to write Editorials, Research Highlights and other content.

Role Responsibilities:

• Selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy, following procedures determined by the Chief Editor.
• Make manuscripts selected for publication accessible to a wide readership.
• Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to Editorial production in an appropriate, complete state.
• Recommend appropriately selected manuscripts to the Chief Editor for inclusion in News and Views.
• Suggest topics for review-type articles and commentaries; assess proposals from potential authors.
• Commission and edit News and Views articles each month.
• Write Research Highlights each month for the journal.
• Be responsible to the Chief Editor for various agreed sections of the journal.
• Suggest appropriate topics for Editorials.
• Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions.
• Participate in the delivery of Masterclasses to support business requirements.
• Advise Advertising, Marketing, Sponsorship and Site Licence departments as required.
• Devise and supply editorial content for special projects.
• Assist in covering the editorial responsibilities of colleagues in their absence.

Key relationships:

• Work with other members of the editorial, publishing, production, web production, copy editing and administrative staff.
• Advise advertising, marketing, sponsorship and site licence departments.
• Establish and enhance the reputation of the journal and Nature Publishing Group in the scientific community.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

• A science or engineering graduate, usually with a PhD in related discipline.
• PhD-level research experience.
• A thorough understanding of the scientific research community and its needs.
• Positive ability to develop long-term professional relationships.
• In-depth knowledge of particular areas of the journal's scope.
• Strong interpersonal and influential communication skills.
• Strong written communication and editing skills.
• Highly self-motivated and resourceful.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Active, supportive team player.
• Adaptability and flexibility - willing and able to travel.

Desirable

• Editorial experience beneficial but not required.
