The Human-Centered Data Science group led by Lisa Beinborn is looking for a PhD candidate.

Our Research

Our research is interdisciplinary at its core and we cooperate closely with colleagues from other faculties (e.g., psychology, humanities). We take a human-centered perspective on natural language processing research and focus on the following topics:

  1. the cognitive plausibility, interpretability and generalization capabilities of language processing models
  2. cross-lingual transfer and typological diversity in multilingual models
  3. exploring how language processing differences between humans and computers can guide the development of more efficient models
  4. language technology for education (e.g., readability and simplification, exercise generation, learner modeling)

Your Responsibilities

In this position, you have the chance to work towards a PhD degree. You are expected to:

  1. conduct innovative research in one of the topics mentioned above.
  2. communicate research results in peer-reviewed proceedings and journals and present them at international research conferences.
  3. participate in teaching and examination (4 teaching hours per week).
  4. support curriculum development.
  5. take an active role in supervising students.
  6. participate in development of the research group, for example, by establishing workflows for eye-tracking or annotation experiments and contributing to operational management.

Your Profile

The ideal candidate:

  1. holds an excellent master’s degree in computer science, computational linguistics, cognitive science, or a related discipline.
  2. has experience with natural language processing research and machine learning methods.
  3. can motivate a convincing interest in the topics outlined above.
  4. has obtained teaching experience in natural language processing and is willing to improve didactic competencies.
  5. can independently acquire and process new knowledge.
  6. is a team player with good communication skills and an interdisciplinary mindset.
  7. has obtained analytical and programming skills and is committed to further developing them (experience with running experiments on a cluster is beneficial).
  8. shows very good command of written and spoken English (knowledge of German is beneficial, interest in additional languages is a plus).

To apply

Please submit the following information:

  1. letter of motivation (1 page), including a clear indication why this position is interesting for you and what makes you a qualified candidate
  2. a detailed CV
  3. a transcript of grades (Bachelor/Master studies)
  4. a page containing a link to an example of your work (a publication, your most recent thesis, a code repository) and a short explanation on how this work represents your profile. If the document is not publicly available, please attach it as pdf.

Applications arriving after the deadline will still be considered if the position has not yet been filled. The starting date can be negotiated, preferably as soon as possible.
