JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: SBFC Wilderness Trail Crew Leader (WTCL)
Status: Full time, non-exempt from overtime
Hourly Wage: $19.00-$21.00 DOE
Overtime Rate: $28.50-$31.50
Health Insurance Benefit: $250 per month with proof of health insurance
Uniform: 2 SBFC work shirts provided
Other Benefits:
? $32 per full day field per diem (if group food is not provided)
? Federal mileage reimbursement rate when using personal vehicle for work outside of Missoula
(currently .67 cents per mile)
? Wilderness First Aid certification reimbursement (The WTCL is required to have a current Wilderness First Aid/CPR certification before the start of the season. SBFC will provide up to, but no more than, $800 in reimbursement for a qualifying Wilderness First Aid course. Qualifying certifications include Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, and Wilderness First Responder. Courses must be approved by SBFC before being taken. If you already have a current Wilderness First Responder, other applicable training may be reimbursed by SBFC, up to, but no more than $600. These also must be approved by SBFC for reimbursement before being taken.)

Duty Station: Missoula, MT. Housing is typically not provided for staff positions.


SBFC Mission:
The Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation assists the Forest Service in providing stewardship for the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wildernesses and surrounding wildlands through on the ground work, public education, and partnerships.

Position Summary:
SBFC opens pathways to discover and steward the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Areas. Our Wilderness Trail Crews are the ones doing the incredibly tough and rewarding work of physically opening some of those pathways, and our Wilderness Trail Crew Leaders have the monumental task of efficiently and safely leading those crews, most commonly on 8-day backpacking hitches into the Wilderness. Most of our Wilderness Trail Crew Leaders will spend the majority of their season training and leading our Wilderness Ranger Fellows (WRF). One Wilderness Trail Crew Leader, however, will spend the majority of their time leading our all-staff crew composed of one Wilderness Trail Crew Leader, and up to four Wilderness Trail Crew Members (WTCM).

Essential Responsibilities:
• Plan, coordinate, lead, and complete Wilderness trail maintenance projects.
• Represent SBFC to the highest of your capabilities, recognizing that you are a leader of the organization, particularly when on the trail.
• Develop and hone trail maintenance skills to ensure the highest quality of work that you can achieve, in part so that you can pass those skills on to those you are leading.
• Coordinate and communicate effectively about all projects with Forest Service staff, SBFC Wilderness Program Director, Volunteer Program Director, and Youth Program Director as needed.
• Work collaboratively with the SBFC Volunteer Program Director to ensure thorough
communication with volunteers when needed.
• Provide supervision and leadership for Wilderness Ranger Fellows, seasonal staff,
volunteers, and possibly youth.
• Coordinate tools, stock support, and other logistics for work projects.
• Coordinate, organize, and lead volunteer or youth projects, including menu planning and shopping as needed.
• Complete time tracking, hitch reporting, and any other needed data collection on a
bi-weekly schedule.
• Follow SBFC & USFS communication, safety, and operational protocols.
• Assist SBFC with staff and Fellow training, as requested.
• Maintain accurate quantitative and qualitative data on various trail metrics and WSP
(Wilderness Stewardship Performance) Monitoring.
• Maintain high levels of quality work and positive volunteer experiences.
• Other duties as requested.


Minimum Requirements:
? 1+ seasons of experience leading in a backcountry environment
? 1+ seasons of experience completing overnight trails and/or Wilderness projects on
public lands in a backcountry environment
? Experience safely and efficiently using traditional tools for trail maintenance, including crosscut saws, hand saws, axes and pulaskis
? Current First Aid (or higher)/CPR certifications before the start of employment
? Ability and desire!! to work 10+ hr days in inclement weather for up to eight days at a time (cold, rain, heat, snow, smoke)
? Must be physically capable of performingintense physical labor including:
? Carrying a 60+ pound backpack plus hand tools
? Working 10+ hour days, 8 days in a row, routinely lifting
? Hiking 15+ miles per day in difficult terrain (high elevation, steep trails, etc)
? Lifting 35+ pounds repeatedly


Preferred Qualifications:
? Experience leading volunteers of all ages
? Current Crosscut Sawyer B bucker/A feller certifications or higher
? Current Wilderness First Aid (or higher) and CPR certifications
? Familiarity with the Wilderness Act
? Experience with SBFC and/or the Wilderness Areas we help steward!


Individuals must provide their own backpacking equipment, rain gear, work pants, gloves, and work boots.
