The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its learning, teaching, and research excellence. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.

The Department of Earth Sciences offers degree programmes in Applied Geology and Environmental & Water Sciences. The successful candidates will join the Environmental & Water Sciences section of the department, adding expertise in Water Resource Management and Surface Water Quality.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Involvement in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Participation in community engagement and outreach.
  • Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate field work.
Minimum Requirements

For the post of Lecturer in Water Resource Management, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

  • MSc degree in environmental and water sciences or related field; a PhD in a closely related field would be an advantage.
  • Experience of teaching in a university environment in policies, instruments and tools adopted nationally and internationally related to water resources and environmental management.
  • Experience in supervision of postgraduate student projects will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed accredited journal publications.
  • Experience in conceptual, analytical and numerical modelling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in saturated and unsaturated flow dynamics, and mass transport of contaminants.
  • Experience in GIS and remote sensing technologies in water resources.
  • A candidate with an MSc degree must be registered for doctoral studies with a detailed plan for completion.
For the post of Lecturer in Surface Water Quality, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

  • MSc degree in environmental and water sciences or related field; a PhD in a closely related field would be an advantage.
  • Experience of teaching in a university environment in the field of water quality assessment and monitoring programmes.
  • Experience in supervision of postgraduate student projects will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed accredited journal publications.
  • Experience in statistical processing of environmental data and risk analysis.
  • Experience in GIS and remote sensing technologies in water resources.
  • A candidate with an MSc degree must be registered for doctoral studies with a detailed plan for completion.
