Job Description

The Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture: Department of Jewellery Design & Manufacture.


Responsibilities

  1. First Aid training, Gas safety training, and Occupational Health and safety Training
  2. FADA Health and Safety committee Liaison
  3. Student jewellery retail management – Managing the retail portion of the student jewellery that is sold
  4. Safety Officer within department – Implementation of H&S regulation and general oversight of safety and supervision of students while they are using the workshop
  5. Weekly basic Gas Maintenance and Safety checks and reporting
  6. Management and upkeep of studios, design room and staff spaces
  7. Escalating and liaising with service providers toward equipment and tool maintenance
  8. Communal tools distribution and stock take
  9. Management of loan tools, distribution and stock take
  10. Collecting, weighing and refining of scrap metal
  11. Ensuring required materials, equipment and chemicals are ready for use
  12. Metal and consumables management, stock taking and metal register and distribution.
  13. Managing student Assistants' “payback system”
  14. Regular checking of conditions of skins to limit metal loss.
  15. Assist Coordinators with CAD classes
  16. Assist Coordinators with gemstone setting for specific student projects
  17. Assist Coordinators with laser cutting projects for students using CAD
  18. Demonstrating correct usage of equipment and chemicals to students
  19. Demonstrating best practices in studio (including sustainable approaches)
  20. Overseeing student daily workshop clean ups (daily cleaning of benches and weekly cleaning of studios)
  21. Inventory of all assets, equipment, tools and consumables
  22. Ordering of metal, solders as well as distribution of metal and stones to coordinators.
  23. Ordering of gas and oxygen when necessary
  24. Quotation request for metal, consumables, maintenance and equipment

Minimum Requirements

  1. Relevant Qualification (Diplomas and Certification) (NQF 6), with 3 to 5 years’ job-related experience.
  2. Experience of using Virtual Learning Environment to support technology enhanced learning
  3. Understanding of mould-making specific to Jewellery
  4. Experience of teaching and/or demonstrating equipment and techniques relating to Jewellery and 3D modelling (CAD/CAM)
  5. Experience and working knowledge of laser cutting
  6. Experience and working knowledge of gemstone setting
