Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

To outline the responsibilities and authorities the Technician has in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical and key support personnel.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Must be able to record, evaluate and validate instrumentation for specific job data (LECO, XRD, XRF, OES & Wet Chem).
  2. Completes tasks within the allocated time and plans work for operators to ensure that overall service goals of the laboratory are met.
  3. Responsible for performing routine and non-routine analytical operations on specific instrumentation (LECO, XRD, XRF, OES & Wet Chem) as required.
  4. Ensure turnaround time is adhered to at all times for work specified regarding instrumentation analysis.
  5. Responsible for performing all analysis.
  6. Under the guidance of instrumentation seniors, assist in the work required to validate any new methods or modifications made for analysis.
  7. Bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the seniors.
  8. Adhere to quality protocols required for accreditation of instrumentation chemical analysis.
  9. Follow all quality, health, and safety rules and regulations.
  10. Ensure that the housekeeping for the general working area is kept up to standard.
  11. Comply and conform to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  12. Record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration, and verification of instruments performed.
  13. Ensure correct consumables and chemicals are used for instrumentation chemical analysis.
  14. Work in other areas of the instrumentation laboratory, Analytical Services and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  15. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  16. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

COMPLIANCE & AUTHORITY

  1. Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  2. Cease work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  3. Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified, or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

Education

  1. Matriculation, with Mathematics and Science.
  2. B.Sc. degree or relevant diploma in Analytical Chemistry.

Experience

  1. Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
  2. LIMS administration and operation.
  3. Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
  4. At least 3 years’ experience.

Required Skills

  1. Competent in the use of the LIMS.
  2. Must be able to troubleshoot instruments and methods used.
  3. Must know how to verify calibration standards, quality control standards, verification standards, and Certified Reference Materials (CRM’s).
  4. Managing Good Laboratory Practice.
  5. Assisting the Chemist with:
  6. Preparation of SANAS audits.
  7. Completing laboratory documentation.
