Our Global client with Head Office in New Zealand and staff sitting in Cape Town, UK, New Zealand, India and Europe are seeking a Junior Quality Engineer with 6 months to 2 years of experience in software testing or a related field.

Purpose of the position

The Quality Engineer L1 (QE) will support the testing of software products to ensure they meet industry standards and customer requirements. They will assist in executing test cases, reporting defects, and gaining exposure to automation tools and software development life cycle (SDLC) methodologies. The ideal candidate should be eager to learn, collaborate effectively in a team environment, and communicate clearly with team members and stakeholders.

Accountabilities and Duties

  • Report results and issues out of testing to delivery team.
  • Develop and execute manual tests to ensure the quality of software products. As they gain experience, the expectation is that they contribute to automation efforts across the team.
  • Collaborate with developers and other team members to identify, diagnose, and resolve software defects.
  • Develop and maintain test cases and test scripts.
  • Review and provide feedback on software requirements and specifications, working with more senior QEs on the team to verify and understand requirements.
  • Assist in root cause analysis by providing as much detail as possible for defects that are found.
  • Participate in software development life cycle activities, including design reviews, code reviews, and testing.
  • Stay current with industry standards and emerging technologies.
  • Execute test cases: Independently run manual and automated tests, report defects, and validate fixes.
  • Provide input on test scenarios: Suggest test cases based on requirements, with oversight from senior QEs.
  • Identify basic issues in requirements: Flag inconsistencies or ambiguities but defer final decisions to mid/senior team members.
  • Defect reporting and tracking: Raise bugs with clear documentation and escalate critical issues when needed.
  • Test data preparation: Set up and manage simple test environments or datasets.
  • Participate in QA discussions: Share observations and propose small improvements while following team guidance.
  • There is an expectation that the role accountabilities and duties will evolve over time.
  • It may be necessary to review this job description through a consultative approach and make alterations in response to the changing nature of our work environment, including but not limited to technological requirements or statutory changes.

  • This position requires a high degree of autonomy and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Although this is a junior role, the candidate must be capable of working independently in a remote environment while remaining under appropriate supervision.
  • The role has no authority to incur routine expenditure, commit capital expenditure, approve loans, or extend credit without approval from the Managing Director or the Managing Director's designated representative.

Experience and Qualifications

  • 6 months to 2 years of experience in software testing or a related field.
  • Exposure to manual testing and familiarity with test case execution and defect tracking.
  • Basic understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and software testing life cycle (STLC).
  • Experience with test management tools (e.g., JIRA, TestRail) is a plus.
  • Some exposure to automation testing (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright) is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Ability to follow test plans, report issues, and collaborate with developers and QA teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certifications (optional but beneficial): ISTQB Foundation Level or other relevant QA certifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new testing methodologies and tools.
