Job description

Tax Compliance / Reporting Lead – Johannesburg.

Are you a meticulous tax professional with a sharp eye for detail and a passion for compliance? This role offers the opportunity to take full ownership of tax reporting across a diverse portfolio of African markets within the fast-paced gaming industry.

As the Tax Compliance and Reporting Lead, you’ll play a key role in managing VAT, corporate tax, and audit deliverables, while also driving accuracy, efficiency, and best practices across all entities.

If you’re ready to step into a role where your expertise truly makes an impact – this one’s for you.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of reviewing all gaming VAT and tax calculations for operating entities across Africa.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of VAT and tax returns, working closely with internal teams to request and follow up on payments before the deadline.
  • Act as the key point of contact for gaming-related tax queries from authorities – owning the response process, gathering supporting documentation, and coordinating resolutions quickly and efficiently.
  • Oversee the accuracy of monthly VAT and Withholding Tax computations for all African operations.
  • Review submissions with a critical eye before final sign-off, ensuring all payments are requested and tracked through to completion.
  • Manage the end-to-end process of responding to tax authority queries, ensuring all follow-ups are resolved without delays.
  • Prepare comprehensive quarterly tax disclosure schedules and deferred tax calculations, including posting entries where applicable.
  • Drive the preparation and/or review of annual corporate tax computations, ensuring these are audit-ready and aligned with local compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Tax, Finance Director, and external auditors to ensure smooth submission and sign-off of corporate tax filings.
  • Review and track all tax payments from submission to payment receipt, ensuring proper reconciliation of monthly tax and VAT vendor accounts and clearing unmatched items.
  • Roll out targeted tax training for finance teams, ensuring that any changes in legislation – especially across multiple African countries – are fully understood and implemented across departments.
  • Provide clear, data-driven commentary on monthly tax movements and trends.
  • Reconcile tax returns to general ledger accounts across all tax types, flagging anomalies and ensuring records are audit-compliant.
  • Oversee the submission and accuracy of SOX support documentation via FloQast on a monthly basis.
  • Lead the preparation of quarterly and annual tax disclosure packs and deferred tax files for each legal entity.
  • Apply relevant IFRS standards to financial statements and ensure timely upload of audit files to designated portals.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the audit process, from collecting and submitting supporting documentation to managing back-and-forth on audit queries with team leads and financial managers.
  • Track all audit-related journals and prepare detailed summaries comparing pre- and post-journal trial balances to signed AFS.
  • Ensure financial statements are polished and ready for internal and external review.
  • Compile internal audit files and set up review meetings with key stakeholders to maintain audit readiness throughout the year.
  • Keep the Tax Matrix fully up to date across all operating entities, reflecting accurate country-specific tax requirements and integrating new market entries as they happen.
  • Tackle various ad hoc tax and compliance projects that arise as the business evolves.

Requirements:

  • A collaborative mindset, working closely with treasury accountants, financial controllers, and gaming finance teams to ensure tax obligations are met smoothly and on time.
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—with a proactive approach to resolving issues before they escalate.
  • The ability to manage multiple deadlines and stakeholders while keeping deliverables on track and aligned with audit and reporting cycles.
  • A commitment to bi-annual objective setting and continuous improvement.
