BIOSTATISTICS UNIT

(DURBAN /PRETORIA /CAPE TOWN OFFICE)

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation’s health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. It further aims to promote equity, career development and progression.

STATISTICIAN / SENIOR STATISTICIAN

Two (2) Permanent Positions

The Biostatistics Unit of the SAMRC is an active research entity that collaborates with health and medical researchers from the SAMRC, universities, other research institutions and international agencies. Statisticians in the Biostatistics Unit provide statistical support on design, analysis and reporting, to collaborative national and international projects in the SAMRC research portfolio. These range from surveys, epidemiological studies to randomised controlled and clinical trials. Statistical methodological development as well as the training and supervision of researchers and junior staff is also done. The Biostatistics Unit offers a challenging biostatistics career in health and clinical research within a dynamic environment. The Unit has a number of methodological research programs such as longitudinal data analysis and spatial data analysis. The successful candidates will have an individual research portfolio and contribute to these programs.

Core Requirements:

  1. Hold a MSc in statistics, biostatistics, or biometry; At least 3 years’ experience (Senior Statistician)/ 2 years’ experience (Statistician) in a clinical and health research environment.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. The ability to undertake projects in Biostatistical methodology and applied Biostatistical research projects; or being a co-investigator or study statistician in Health-related projects.
  4. Evidence of strong academic background and peer-reviewed ISI publication record, with at least 3 ISI publications (Senior Statistician)/1 ISI publication (Statistician).
  5. Ability to communicate statistical concepts and information to non-statisticians in Health and Clinical Sciences.
  6. Evidence of strong teamwork to successfully work in a project team.

Advantageous:

  1. Experience working with epidemiology and public health research groups and centers.

The level of appointment will be subject to the applicant meeting the criteria for the various levels.

A salary in the region of R534 050 (Statistician - Seasoned) or R591 632 per annum (Senior Statistician - Entry) will be offered, cost-to-company, dependent on qualifications and research experience.
