SHERQ Manager

The inherent risks in glass handling activities require the management of safety to be a top priority. The essence of this job can be summarised as follows:

  1. Ensure compliance with the OHS Act and other applicable legislation pertaining to prescribed standards and safety.
  2. Ensure that Safety policies, systems and procedures in place are managed and maintained.
  3. Ensure that People, Facilities and Equipment are managed and in compliance with agreed standards.
  4. Proactively manage Safety through meetings, audits, risk assessments, and task observations to ensure a safe work environment where all employees are focused on Safety First.

Key Performance Areas

  1. Ensure a safe working environment through compliance with the requirements of the relevant legislation (OHS Act).
  2. Ensure all Legal Safety appointments are in place and in compliance with the OHS Act.
  3. Drive safety campaigns to educate and create awareness of safety hazards and risk.
  4. Oversee and manage the administrative and operational activities of the Safety systems and documentation to ensure availability and accuracy.
  5. Identify training needs, conduct and arrange safety training as required.
  6. Responsible for ensuring all incidents are recorded, investigated, and communicated to prevent re-occurrence and reduce risk on site.
  7. Actively facilitate Safety Management and support all appointed First Aiders / Health & Safety Reps and Managers in the various operational areas.
  8. Set and facilitate Safety meetings, minute discussions, and drive Safety actions.
  9. Conduct weekly Safety audits and ensure that Task Observations are done in line with requirements, highlight findings, and drive the implementation of actions.
  10. Conduct risk assessments for all operational areas and processes to ensure that risks are highlighted and managed effectively.
  11. Drive the Incident management process, ensure that all managers and employees understand the reporting and investigation procedure, manage strict adherence, and ensure that all incidents are thoroughly investigated, and root causes and corrective actions identified.
  12. Support the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) claims management process.
  13. Update the Safety Management system with any changes to Legislation of the OSH Act.
  14. Ensure that all Safe Works Instructions, Safety files, and the Training registers are properly registered and kept up to date in line with requirements.
  15. Conduct regular audits to ensure all PPLE Employees are put through formal induction and training prior to operating in the Warehouse and Dispatch operations.
  16. Continuously audit Forklift and Crane operator licenses and certificates for working at heights to ensure compliance.
  17. Ensure all Facilities, Equipment, and Tools in use comply with legal requirements as stipulated in the OSH Act and that routine inspections and certifications are carried out.
  18. Conduct daily walks through warehouse and dispatch operations and monitor Safety compliance in relevant work environments.

Qualifications Required

  1. Matric certificate.
  2. National Diploma in Safety Management or Equivalent.
  3. Advanced Microsoft Office skills to compile safety stats, maintain training, and present the safety stats to all levels of the organisation.
  4. First Aid Certification.
  5. Fire Safety Certification.

Skills and Experience Required

  1. Sound knowledge of the relevant legislation in the OSH Act, COID, and National Building Regulation Act.
  2. Minimum of 5 years working experience practicing as a Safety Officer in a multiple shift operation with a workforce of at least employees.
  3. Must have a proven track record on the reduction of frequency of IFR and LTIFR Risk Assessment Training.
  4. Knowledge of Safe Crane and Forklift operation.
  5. Knowledge of Lifting Equipment and Attachments.
  6. Knowledge of Safe Warehouse handling and Stacking Practices.
  7. Must have a proven track record of managing, driving, and maintaining focus on safety to create an ever-increasing risk-free and safe work environment.
  8. Must have a proven track record of thoroughly investigating safety incidents and driving corrective action that stems from it.
  9. Must have experience in drawing up Safe Works Instructions and Risk assessments and to manage and coordinate the training and evaluation process to ensure continuous alignment with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  10. Experience in Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) Programs and Cultural Safety Shifts.
  11. Experience in Emergency Response Planning, including Fire Evacuations, Chemical Spill Response, and High-Risk Incident Management.
  12. Workplace Ergonomics and Material Handling Risk Assessments (for glass lifting and handling safety).
  13. Incident Data Analysis & Reporting using SHEQ Software.
