Job Description
Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- To ensure that all designs incorporate the appropriate safety standards and that all activities comply with plant group and/or statutory procedures.
- A thorough understanding of the processes operating within the system under study and may require the search for or the development of standards, where the process is new and not covered by existing procedures. The commissioning of new and unfamiliar plants requires detailed study to predict and pre-empt safety hazards.
- To investigate as directed, problem areas/opportunities, the solutions of which shall be beneficial to the group to motivate the identified solution.
- The clues to the solutions to a problem are, typically, numerous and are often only indirectly associated with the apparent effects. Alternative solutions can be varied and as they are normally part of a complex, interactive system, detailed evaluation of the effects, which may extend outside the immediate area of investigation, i.e., what may be an obvious solution to a problem seen in isolation at a concentrator could produce unacceptable spin-off effects at the smelter or refineries. The Senior Process Engineer would be expected to, under the direction of a superior, investigate such alternatives.
- Technically conversant with all aspects of a problem/solution; to supervise and/or co-ordinate technical investigations by internal parties.
- To undertake the process design of approved projects (extensions, modifications or new processes) in accordance with the appropriate standards and practices, so as to ensure the cost-effective attainment of objectives.
- To liaise with other engineering functions during the design and implementation cycle in order to provide information and to ensure that process objectives are met.
- During the execution phase of a project, the Senior Process Engineer will be a member of a multi-discipline project team. A number of the disciplines depend on the input of process information during the design and execution phase to work efficiently in order to carry out their own functions effectively. The Senior Process Engineer must have the ability to work efficiently when interfacing with a number of different functions.
- To prepare comprehensive commissioning plans/procedures and to commission and optimise the modifications/installations in accordance with the agreed targets.
- Efficient commissioning plans need to be prepared in consultation with the direct superior of the Senior Process Engineer in order to pre-empt problems and maintain a project on target.
This role is at a Band 6 level reporting to the Manager Technical Processing.
Qualifications
- Honours degree in Chemical / Metallurgical Engineering, Extraction Metallurgy or Mineral Processing.
- Should be eligible for registration as a professional Engineer with ECSA.
Experience
- Production or technical experience in an operational metallurgical or chemical plant.
- 5 to 10 years working experience will be advantageous.
- Experience of formal project management, process design and/or commissioning in a projects environment advantageous.
- General familiarity with metallurgical flow sheeting, mass and energy balance and the basics of unit processes. Some experience with control systems would also be advantageous. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a sound technical aptitude for analytical problem solving and the ability to use lateral thinking. In addition to the basic competencies, the candidate should be able to develop P&ID control logic, prepare data sheets, specifications and commissioning plans.
- Experience in Smelting operation will be advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills
- A thorough knowledge of the relevant standards and codes of practice is required, plus an ability to assemble a flow sheet that meets the project objectives. Each level of design will normally present several options, the merits and demerits of which have to be evaluated, and the whole assembled into a viable system and detailed for action by other disciplines.
- Develops technical expertise in discipline and has a working knowledge of other technical disciplines in order to appreciate all the aspects of a problem and to co-ordinate the inputs successfully with internal parties. The resolution of a problem may require participation in R&D programmes by organisations such as the Anglo Technical Department.
