A fantastic opportunity has arisen in The Broadmoor Hospital Portering & Waste Department for a Band 3 Team Leader.
The successful candidate will join a highly innovative team delivering high-quality portering in an inpatient mental health setting. This is an amazing position for someone who is driven to improve standards and the patient experience.
You will be accountable for leading an in-house team of porters and will work as part of the team, being responsible for a team-focused approach to the portering team on delivering all day-to-day operations. The successful candidate will assist and support the existing team in working productively and safely to ensure that all operations are managed to the best possible standards with the resources available. You will support the Portering and Waste Supervisor in providing an efficient, safe, and user-based portering service in accordance with the standard operating procedures whilst adhering to all relevant Health & Safety, Hygiene, and COSHH legislation.
Main Duties of the Job
- Lifting, handling, transportation, and distribution of goods including food, mail, bedding, medication, newspapers, furniture, and waste, and patient property.
- To ensure that confidential waste, prohibited items, confidential correspondence (e.g. medical records), valuables, financial items, medicines, and medical items are handled correctly by Portering staff in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- To deputise for the Porter and Waste Supervisor in times of absence though days off, sickness, or leave.
- To liaise with relevant departments to ensure maintenance of Portering vehicles and equipment, ensuring weekly audit and weekend daily check documentation is completed, and any damage / defects are reported to the Porter and Waste Supervisor.
- To carry out actions that are reported by the Portering Team relating to defects to vehicles / trailers, and refer issues to Transport if required.
- Respond to ad-hoc requests received via email or Pirana, and ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.
- To allocate tasks to team members, ensuring any extra work is distributed fairly and evenly.
- Act as point of contact for any issues raised by team members or wards / departments within the Hospital.
- Ensure a full handover to the Porter and Waste Supervisor is completed at the end of each shift.
- To ensure safe movement, management, and disposal of all waste generated in the hospital.

Qualifications
- Good general education: reading, writing, and basic numeracy skills.
- Health & Safety Qualification.
- Appropriate waste management training that covers duty of care and legislation.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years' experience of supervision of team members.
- Previous experience of working in an NHS environment.
- Experience working in a secure environment.
Knowledge
- Good understanding of Portering / internal and external postal services and waste streams.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety including Manual Handling techniques.
- Good understanding of COSHH.
- Good understanding of confidentiality.

£28,000 to £30,000 a year Per Annum Inclusive of Allowances.
