Job Description : Our client is a well-established diversified mining company seeking a Senior Planning Engineer to join their team based at corporate headquarters in Johannesburg.
The purpose of this position is to provide specialist support in the development and execution of life-of-asset planning across the organization's mining operations.
This role focuses on ensuring the optimal performance, sustainability, and risk management of assets throughout their lifecycle.
The specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze asset data, identify improvement opportunities, and contribute to the development of asset management strategies that align with operational and financial objectives.
This position reports directly to the Manager LoAP.
Responsibilities :
- Oversee consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
- Develop and optimize life-of-asset plans (LoAP), including scheduling for both open pit and underground operations, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational goals.
- Mine Design and Scheduling: Create detailed mine designs, including pit and stope designs, waste management strategies, and production schedules.
- Cost Estimation and Optimisation: Perform cost estimation and mine optimisation to improve project economics and sustainability.
- Ore Reserves: Complete all required work to act as a Competent Person, reviewing all aspects of the Ore Reserves from geology through to financial evaluation.

Requirements :
- Bachelor's degree in mining engineering or other relevant discipline.
- Master's Degree in Mining or Finance, or MBA advantageous.
- Valid EB / Code 08 driver's licence.
- Must be a Competent Person for Ore Reserves (e.g., JORC) with a proven track record of signing off on reports.
- At least 5-7 years' experience in a similar level role.
- Overall expert knowledge of the full mining value chain including geology, processing, tailings, smelting, and refining.
- Proficient skill in Deswik.CAD, Deswik.Sched, and Deswik.LHS for long-term scheduling and optimization.
- Advanced skills in Minemax for strategic scheduling.
- Expert skill in manipulating a geological resource model.
- Ability to identify material value drivers and prioritise them in day-to-day work.
- Advanced ability to analyse complex data and translate it into practical mine plans and cost-effective solutions.
- Strong ability in troubleshooting mine design and scheduling problems.
