SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Sites and Commercial Laboratories. The role includes but is not limited to assisting the Supervisor/ Laboratory Manager with all tasks, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. The Senior Materials Tester will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from the technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a person with integrity and good interpersonal skills, able to command respect from those he/she deals with, while possessing enough energy and passion to maintain good staff relationships. A successful career in delivering performance against agreed strategic objectives will be essential, ensuring that all quality and testing methods are observed, and any deviation is reported without delay.
Job Description
- Responsible for supervising and/or carrying out testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for, strictly in accordance with prescribed methods.
- Responsible for cleaning up the site or workshop after tasks are completed or at the end of the day, ensuring it is free of all consumables used to perform the job.
- Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
- Orally report any deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
- Perform all field and laboratory work including sampling, calculations, and performing test methods accurately.
- Complete timesheets accurately on a daily basis.
- Ensure discipline within his/her assigned department.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 / NQF4 or an additional three years relevant experience for each year of schooling below grade 12.
- Knowledge, skills, and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning.
- Language: Proficiency in English (Read, write, speak).
- Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Must be competent and comfortable with the SANS and THM 1 test methods.
Additional Information
- Sampling and preparation experience advantageous.
- Administration experience will be advantageous.
- Fieldwork experience (densities, layer/stockpile sampling, manufacture and handling of concrete cubes, DCP, Ring and Ball test (road surfaces), Sand Patch, On Site Viscosity tests, Sampling of Asphalt and Bitumen).
- Competent and qualified to perform all tests in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate.
- Perform all calculations in full related to the tests mentioned above.
- Control laboratory activities such as quality control under supervision.
- Physically able and willing to work with, move, and pick up samples as and when required.
