Leadership Pipeline Manage Managers Job Purpose

To manage a team and portfolio of data science projects with a focus on Machine Learning (ML) Engineering through multiple squads with a medium-term strategic horizon.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Define, grow and lead a team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers at any proficiency levels.
  2. Discover areas within Nedbank group that can be automated through machine learning.
  3. Demonstrated technical knowledge of Machine Learning (Supervised and Unsupervised learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing and Re-Enforcement learning and similar Quantitative modelling techniques).
  4. Understand the business reality behind large sets of data and develop meaningful solutions comprising of analytics.
  5. Work closely with internal stakeholders like the business teams, engineering teams and partner teams and align them with respect to your focus area.
  6. Innovate by adapting new Machine Learning modelling techniques and procedures.
  7. Passionate about working with disparate and large datasets to answer business questions; possess deep expertise in creation and management of datasets.
  8. Exposure to implementing and operating stable, scalable analytical solutions from production systems into end-user facing applications/reports. These solutions will be fault tolerant, self-healing and adaptive.
  9. Experience in dealing with data from various sources and message streams and construct complex analyses. Implement data flow solutions that process data real time on message streams from source systems.
  10. Detail-oriented with an aptitude for solving unstructured problems; able to work in a self-directed environment, own tasks, and drive them to completion.
  11. Excellent business and communication skills, able to work with business owners to develop and define key business questions and to build data sets that answer those questions. Own customer relationships about data and execute tasks that ensure high data availability, low latency, documenting data details and transformations, and handling user notifications and training.
  12. Manage Financial and Business Results; ensure that all individual and department results are delivered within budget and deadlines.
  13. Ensure budget targets are met by effectively executing and complying with Divisional billing requirements and targets.
  14. Ensure that transparent transfer pricing for provision of products and services for the business area is followed through.
  15. Activity Justified Transfer Pricing (AJTP) model (aligned to GT service model) by establishing costs, prices, and conditions.
  16. Ensure effective targeted cost recovery through monitoring and ensuring all times are captured by staff on a weekly basis.
  17. Ensure quality projects/processes/systems are delivered on time and are fully aligned to Nedbank's business requirements.
  18. Provide agreed information, resources, professional advice, and strategic contributions to relevant stakeholders on time, within budget, and within quality standards.
  19. Ensure that all individual and department results are delivered within budget and deadlines.
  20. Deliver services to client expectations and Nedbank standards.
  21. Quality projects/processes/systems delivered on time and fully aligned to Nedbank's business requirements.
  22. Manage Stakeholder Relationships; deliver services on client expectations and Nedbank standards by ensuring the Service Level Agreement, Operational level agreements, contractual agreements, and project schedules are met as stipulated.

  1. Advise and consult to clients by providing professional solutions that meet the requirements of the client’s business needs.
  2. Ensure that professional solutions are delivered within agreed parameters and timelines.
  3. Ensure that professional solutions demonstrate a balance of best of breed and return on investment for the client.
  4. Enable the building of commercially viable relationships with clients by providing quality advice.
  5. Monitor and manage client, service providers/vendors, partners, and other stakeholder expectations.
  6. Actively engage to establish trust and respect among department members, direct reports, stakeholders & manager/s through active engagement with all parties.
  7. Deliver best practice services to client expectations.
  8. Proactively support and share information and knowledge with peers in own and other departments and functions. Build effective communication and relationship networks upwards, downwards, sideways, and outwards.
  9. Manage Internal Processes; operationalise Divisional Strategy by ensuring all supervisors and first line managers understand and prioritise work in alignment with Divisional Strategy.
  10. Empower first line managers with effective performance measures that are aligned to strategy.
  11. Ensure the professional field is leveraged to enable strategy and that proposed solutions related to the field are embedded in strategy.
  12. Select appropriate professional frameworks, methods/supporting technologies in line with Agreed Architecture and expected return on investments.
  13. Manage multiple assets through the development, implementation, and review of strategies and planning for the area.
Essential Qualifications - NQF Level
  1. Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees.
  2. Matric / Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate.
Preferred Qualification
  1. Tertiary Qualification/formal accreditation in STEM related field.
  2. BSC Computer Science, BSc Engineering, Econometrics, Mathematical Statistics, Actuary Science.
  3. Masters or Doctorate will be an added advantage.
  4. Postgraduate management qualification.
  5. MBA.
Essential Certifications
  1. ITIL Talent nurturing or equivalent MMP/SMP / MM or equivalent.
Minimum Experience Level
  1. Minimum 6 to 8 years Data Science experience with 1-2 years management experience.
Technical / Professional Knowledge
  1. Deep understanding of Machine Learning, Statistics, Optimization or related field.
  2. Experience in Python (Must), R and one additional language (SAS, Java Lua, Clojure, Scala, etc).
  3. Experience working with large data sets, simulation/optimization, and distributed computing tools (Spark, RAY, etc).
  4. Experience in end to end Use case delivery.
  5. Ability to translate data narrative to business narrative.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with a strong desire to work in cross-functional teams.
