Job Purpose
The position is critical to the overall client services operations of the University Libraries as they solely depend on the smooth running and maintenance of the IT infrastructure.
The person occupying this position plays a critical role in providing:
- Strategic leadership and guidance in the provision of Library IT services within CPUT Libraries.
- Managing, planning, organizing and controlling the IT department operations within CPUT Libraries.
- Contributing to the strategic objectives of the Library and implementation thereof.
- Fostering relationships within the CPUT environment, the academic environment, CTS, IT service providers, community organisations and public users to promote healthy cooperation with CPUT Libraries.
- Managing a team of library IT personnel responsible for maintenance of the library management system, overseeing software integration projects, and maintenance of computer labs within all university libraries.
- Contributing to and supporting the library’s eResearch activities at the university.
The position also plays a key role in coordinating the university libraries' participation in regional, national and international IT-related projects that promote Open Science and knowledge dissemination activities.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- 4-year degree qualification in computer science, information systems or information technology.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience managing IT infrastructure.
- Knowledge of Linux system administration and maintenance of Linux and PHP based systems.
- Working knowledge of database systems such as MySQL, PostGres, ORACLE and SQL queries.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience programming in PHP, Java, or Python, HTML, and XML.
- Evidence of Web design and Web scripting experience.
Recommendations:
- Experience with Data visualization software such as MS PowerBI or Tableau.
- Experience with DSpace installations, maintenance, and migrations.
- A driver’s license will be an added advantage for travelling across CPUT campuses.

- Provide vision and strategic leadership regarding the use of information technology to advance library IT services.

- Sound knowledge of diverse library systems and applications and their setup, configuration, deployment, implementation, and testing.
- Management of all library applications, licensing, upgrading, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Management of all library IT security, including physical and data security.
- Management of library IT hardware e.g., desktops, laptops, scanners, maintenance, upgrades, and record-keeping.
- Excellent communication and people management skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a team as well as independently.
- Building strategic work partnerships and relationships.
- Conflict management and information monitoring.
- Planning and organizing, mentoring, and coaching skills.
