Senior Electricity Business Developer – Wheeling – Cape Town

Redefine how municipalities access and distribute energy! We're looking for a Business Development Lead to head up our clients' energy sales and partnerships within South Africa's municipal energy market. Municipalities play a critical role in energy distribution, and we need a dynamic leader who can unlock new sales opportunities, drive regulatory alignment, and position our client as the go-to strategic energy partner.

Whether it's direct energy sales to municipalities or enabling wheeling solutions for third-party customers, your expertise will be instrumental! To be considered for this role, you need to understand municipal procurement policies and have experience working with NERSA, Eskom, and public sector frameworks.

We need a strategic influencer who can build trust with stakeholders, negotiate high-value contracts, and advocate for policy change.

Education Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Policy, Energy Economics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  2. Postgraduate qualification (e.g., MBA, Public Administration, or Energy Law) is advantageous

Experience Requirements

  1. Proven track record in energy sales, business development, or municipal engagement
  2. 7+ years of experience in business development, public sector engagement, regulatory affairs, or energy sales
  3. Strong understanding of municipal energy procurement processes, Eskom's supply structure, and South Africa's regulatory landscape
  4. Experience in developing and closing large-scale energy contracts, PPPs, or municipal service agreements

Responsibilities

  1. Market & Opportunity Analysis: Develop and implement a strategic plan to penetrate the municipal energy sector, identifying high-potential sales opportunities through research on municipal energy demand, procurement processes, and regulations
  2. Business Planning & Strategy Development: Create financially and operationally viable business plans for municipal energy solutions, ensuring scalability and long-term growth
  3. Stakeholder & Partnership Engagement: Establish and strengthen relationships with municipal leaders, energy managers, procurement officials, and regulatory bodies to drive strategic partnerships and sales
  4. Regulatory & Compliance Management: Monitor policy changes, municipal procurement regulations, and industry developments, advocating for business-friendly energy policies that promote private-sector participation
  5. Sales & Business Development Execution: Develop compelling proposals for municipalities, lead contract negotiations, and structure Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to facilitate energy adoption
  6. Product & Solution Development: Identify key municipalities for energy trading, wheeling, and direct supply agreements while building a pipeline of municipal-connected customers for alternative energy solutions
  7. Performance Tracking & Reporting: Track market access progress, regulatory milestones, and signed municipal agreements, providing leadership with insights on sales conversion rates, advocacy efforts, and stakeholder engagement
  8. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product development, legal, and trading teams to align energy solutions with overall business strategy
  9. Innovation & Industry Best Practices: Research global and regional trends in municipal energy markets to optimise renewable energy solutions and drive innovation

Skills

  1. Strong strategic business development and sales acumen
  2. Ability to simplify complex regulatory issues and influence decision-making
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication, including experience in public speaking and industry representation
