Senior Accountant

A respected and growing Retail organization in Durban North is looking for an experienced Financial Accountant who possesses a deep understanding of the Islamic religion to join their team. This role requires a proactive, detail-oriented individual capable of handling complex financial operations and ensuring compliance with deadlines.

Job Summary:

As a Financial Accountant, you will play a key role in overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing strategic financial insights. This position requires a solid understanding of general accounting principles as well as a sensitivity to and respect for Islamic religious practices in business operations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Bcom Degree in Finance / Accounting
• Must have completed SAICA Articles
• Must be willing to work Monday - Saturday
• Must have minimum 2 - 3 years' accounting experience
• Retail industry experience will be an added bonus

Key Responsibilities:

• Review the processing of bank statements, petty cash transactions, creditor invoices, returns, and reconciliations
• Maintain the supplier aged analysis and update cash flow regularly
• Process various journals as needed and ensure correct application of 'match-open' items for both local and foreign suppliers, reporting any variances
• Ensure timely and accurate payments through the banking system and update daily cash flow
• Supervise and review the bookkeeper’s tasks to ensure completeness and accuracy

Weekly Responsibilities:

• Review the bank pack file before submission to the director
• Ensure GRN Accrual account balances and verify the accuracy of the chart of accounts to prevent incorrect allocations
• Maintain the fixed asset register

Monthly Responsibilities:

• Prepare working papers and submit VAT calculations
• Review creditor reconciliations and other month-end processes
• Process payroll journals, submit monthly PAYE
• Issue rental and utility invoices, ensuring payments are received
• Maintain the VAT 12-month forecast and collaborate with external accountants for statutory compliance submissions
• Prepare monthly management packs for both investors and senior management
• Liaise with external consultants, suppliers, and auditors as needed
