Requirements:

• Grade 12 plus B.Sc. Hons Degree (NQF Lev 8) in Restoration Ecology/ Science, Landscape Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Natural Science, Environmental Management or relevant qualifications as recognized by SAQA.
• 3 years’ post qualification relevant experience in applied restoration science, rehabilitation and restoration of degraded ecosystems, terrestrial, wetlands and/or protected areas with Conservation/Environmental Management environment.
• Compulsory registration with SACNASP.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Competency in: Programme and project management, Scientific methodologies and models, Research and development, Computer-aided scientific applications, Knowledge of legal compliance, technical report writing, Creating high performance culture, Professional judgement, Project design, GIS, Remote sensing, Spatial modelling, Python programming, Data analysis, Policy development and analysis, Presentation skills, Mentoring.
• Understanding of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, Sustainable Development Goals and Global Biodiversity Framework.

Duties:

• Develop and implement methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures.
• Monitor project/programme performance.
• Perform scientific functions with basic tasks that require some interpretation in the presence of an established framework.
• Provide scientific support and advice.
• Conduct research and analysis of the nature and complexities of the physical world to identify discoveries that would improve people's lives and ignite scientific knowledge for society.
• Assist in the design and planning of biodiversity and ecological restoration projects including air, soil and water based, assessing areas that require remediation, identifying causes of damage.
• Supervise the implementation and maintenance of ecosystem restoration efforts and educate the public on conservation and ecology.
• Perform scientific analysis and regulatory functions.
• Provide evidence-based decision support in the Department by evaluating and providing comment for protected areas management, compliance and enforcement purposes, permitting and environmental authorisation applications.
• Develop working relations with client base under supervision.
• Create basic public awareness of the science system.
• Provide accurate data and information as requested.
• Conduct basic analysis of scientific data and compile reports.
• Familiarise with existing technologies and procedures.
• Conduct basic and applied research.
• Publish and present research findings.
• Research/literature studies on science to improve expertise.
• Participate in intra and intergovernmental platforms on matters pertaining to ecological rehabilitation and restoration.
