Department Description:

The Wits School of Public Health (Wits SPH) is one of the largest Schools of Public Health in South Africa, known for its high-quality research, community outreach, and policy engagement activities. The Centre for Health Policy (CHP) is a multi-disciplinary research unit that focuses on health systems and policy research.

Position: Researcher/Associate Researcher (One year contract)

We are looking for a Researcher or Associate Researcher for a 1-year contract based in Johannesburg. This role involves collaborating with the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research on a Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) project aimed at developing a research proposal for a community health worker-based intervention for serious mental illness.

Duties:

  1. Coordinate site visits, research activities, and community and stakeholder engagement meetings.
  2. Co-ordinate project team meetings and take minutes.
  3. Organize administrative processes and logistics.
  4. Engage actively in community and stakeholder meetings.
  5. Take notes during focus group discussions and ensure interviews are transcribed.
  6. Maintain regular communication with key community representatives and public sector stakeholders.
  7. Conduct analysis of interviews.
  8. Perform evidence mapping review.

Requirements, Work Experience, and Qualifications:

  1. Relevant Master’s degree (public health, social work, sociology, political science, development studies).
  2. At least 3 years of project management experience in research.
  3. Strong qualitative research skills and knowledge of qualitative research methods.
  4. For the researcher position, at least three (3) publications in accredited journals are required; no articles are required for the Associate Researcher.
  5. Excellent project management skills.
  6. Attention to detail.
  7. Strong writing and conceptual skills.
  8. Ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team.
  9. Highly motivated.

The remuneration package is commensurate with experience and includes medical aid and provident fund, subject to the University’s regulations.
