RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST: RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Duration: One-Year Contract

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to enable a Tuberculosis study to be conducted at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. This will entail recruiting and enrolling study participants, extracting data from clinical notes and capturing these into RedCap. The research assistant will also oversee the adherence component of the study, which includes providing information on ‘Wisepill’, an electronic adherence monitoring device, to participants, showing them how it works and stocking it with medication monthly. During these monthly visits, a depression screening tool will also be administered.

Responsibilities:

• Management of the research site at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital (PMMH) which will include:
• Regular liaison with staff at the drug-resistant TB clinic at PMMH
• Recruitment and enrolment of study participants
• Extraction of data from clinical notes and capturing it into RedCap, ensuring data is collected, cleaned, organized and stored according to SAMRC ethical principles
• Administration of depression screening tools
• Management of electronic data collection tools and processes
• Submission of weekly reports to the study team

Core Requirements:

• Matric with 1-2 years accredited course/certification
• 5 years experience of working in TB/HIV studies
• 2-3 years experience in research/project management
• Experience with conducting screening, obtaining consent/assent and quantitative data collection
• Experience in liaising with health care workers from the Department of Health
• Experience in data capturing
• Fluent in isiZulu and English
• Driver's license and willing to drive to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital

• Effective organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team
• Ability to multitask and work under pressure

A salary in the region of R275 588 per annum, cost-to-company will be negotiated in accordance with qualifications and experience.
