Job description

Our client based in Johannesburg specializes in packaging for the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, household, and personal care markets.

Purpose of the Role:

To ensure products manufactured conform to quality, safety, and reliability standards.

Role: Quality Control Supervisor / Metrologist
Location: Johannesburg : Isando
Industry: Manufacturing - Packaging
Qualification:

  • Must have Grade 12, Matric or NQF4 equivalent qualification.
  • Must have a clear criminal record.
  • Certificate in Quality Control.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in the manufacturing industry.
  • NQF 4 - Supervisory Management Qualification.

Decision Making:
  • Responsible for quality related issues linked to colour and product defects.
  • Able to suspend employees where either employee behaviour or intoxication poses a risk to colleagues and/or equipment.
  • Able to make good business-aligned judgement decisions at an operational level.

Accountability:
  • Responsible for all activities linked to position as defined.
  • Ensures that the structure for escalation of responsibility is effective.
Communication:
  • Report on appropriate forum issues requiring action/action from other departments/instances of major downtime.
  • Shift handovers are conducted daily.

Quality Control Planning:
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures and protocols to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular audits.
  • Develop and maintain quality control records, including documentation of test results, inspection reports, and corrective actions taken.
Quality Control Inspection:
  • Apply the company’s quality principles and standards.
  • Maintain Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Conduct regular inspections of production processes, products, and material to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Conduct testing and evaluation of products to ensure they meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and document non-conformance and implement corrective action.
  • Data capture, analysis, manipulation, conceptualization, and communication, including statistical control and trending.
  • Verify critical dimensions in tooling from initial design through to industrialization, inclusive of product qualification against the sustained parameters.
  • Propose, identify, define and conduct appropriate techniques of measurement, including but not limited to tolerance, sampling techniques, standards, and uncertainties.
  • Qualify measuring equipment.

Personnel Management:
  • Responsible to lead, motivate, and train subordinates.
  • Responsible to manage employees in terms of attendance, timesheets, disciplinary code, policies and procedures, and rostering of tea & lunch breaks.
  • Ensure that packers and operators record and report rejects and problems immediately.
  • Monitor production output in terms of job specifications, production plan, and machine specifications.
  • Ensure control and recording of output, downtimes, and deviations.
  • Hold regular performance reviews to discuss performance against objectives, counselling employees where performance is not in line with the standards.
  • Motivate team to develop with a focus on ongoing improvement. Implement good ideas, give credit where due, support, counsel, and discipline where necessary. Administer return to work interviews.
  • Practical hands-on passing on of skill (“Show and do”).
  • Guide team to ensure that members deliver output and performance of acceptable standard of own accord.
  • Communicate and confirm values and goals and clarify roles on an ongoing basis.
  • Proactively communicate consequences of misconduct to team members.
  • Conduct discipline and counselling where necessary, staying within the limits of orderly actions in terms of the disciplinary code.
  • Train and mentor relevant stakeholders in “industrialized” measuring techniques and sustainable metrology processes.

Customer Service:
  • Responsible for customer inquiries regarding product quality and provide resolutions to customer complaints.

Reporting and Administration:
  • Ensure shift handover meeting takes place daily.
  • Ensure daily audits on quality/visual inspections and housekeeping take place.
Health and Safety:
  • Ensure and enforce that aspects in area of responsibility conform to health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in area of responsibility (e.g. ensure cleanliness assigned machines and areas).
  • Work safely and report on safety hazards or issues.
Report any accidents, incidents, and near misses.

Food Safety Systems Certification - FSSC:
  • Food safety standards are site-specific and at these sites employees should:
  • Apply the site’s food safety principles and standards.
  • Report any food safety hazards or issues to your Supervisor/Manager.
  • Comply to and maintain all GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) in relation to the Company’s FSMS (Food Safety Management System).
Self Development and Growth:
  • Realistic assessment of own strengths and development areas and undertake actions to address weaknesses.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in regulations and industry standards and implement changes as required.
