The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation’s health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. It further aims to promote equity, career development and progression.

Project Manager

Duration: 5 years

The SAMRC’s Grants, Innovation and Product Development (GIPD) Division seeks to appoint a Project Manager to manage a portfolio of grants and budgets as well as procurement and sub-contracts for clinical trials coordinated and/or sponsored by the SAMRC. The incumbent will report to a Program Manager. The appointed post holder will form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.

Responsibilities:

  1. Draft and publicize RFAs, as per grant conditions.
  2. Facilitate the peer review process and selection of grant awardees.
  3. Prepare submissions to the SAMRC EMC for approval of grant awards.
  4. Provide feedback to applicants. Draft project initiation letters.
  5. Facilitate post-award management of grants, contracts, partner agreements, and sub-awards.
  6. Administer program budgets, financial reporting, and disbursements.
  7. Maintain accurate and organized records of awards, contracts, and budgets.
  8. Review technical and financial reports and make recommendations to management on grant status and progress. Monitor compliance with grant conditions and timelines.
  9. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, PIs, host institutions, and collaborators. Assist with queries.
  10. Arrange and attend regular meetings with grant awardees, sub-awardees, PIs, and collaborators. Document and disseminate meeting minutes.
  11. Contribute to the preparation of stakeholder communication materials i.e. website material, presentations, reports, marketing materials, press releases, program pamphlets, etc.
  12. Contribute to project management and administrative activities to support clinical trials being funded and/or coordinated by the SAMRC.
  13. Advance transformation by mentoring and building capacity in accordance with the SAMRC’s Employment Equity Plan.
  14. Contribute to the transformation objectives of the Unit.

Core Requirements:

  1. 4-year tertiary qualification or 3-year degree with Honors in a science discipline.
  2. 3-4 years of relevant experience coordinating/managing projects.

Advantageous:

  1. BSc degree with Honors or equivalent in a biomedical science discipline.
  2. Experience in a public funding and/or research environment, i.e., demonstrated experience managing grants for a funder or at a research organization as a project manager of multiple grants with reporting to different funders.
  3. Experience in contracts management and program budgets.
  4. Demonstrated experience in working across academia, government departments, and industry.
  5. A working knowledge of / background in health research.
  6. Experience in clinical trials.

A salary in the region of R 779 666 per annum, cost-to-company, will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
