Requirements:

  • Basic qualification accredited with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) that allows registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist. Current proof of valid registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist (Proof of annual fee payment).
  • Previous employment as a Pharmacist in the public health sector will be an added advantage.

Duties:

  • The provision of pharmaceutical care by taking responsibility for the patient’s medicine-related needs and being accountable for meeting these needs. This includes but is not limited to:
  1. Evaluation of the patient medicine-related needs by determining the indication, safety, and effectiveness of the therapy.
  2. Dispensing of any medicine or scheduled substance on a prescription of a person authorized to prescribe medicine.
  3. Provision of comprehensive patient counselling & furnishing of information and advice to any person regarding the use of medicine.
  4. Determining compliance with therapy and follow-up to ensure that the patient’s medicine-related needs are being met.
  5. Liaising with medical/nursing staff on patient problems regarding inappropriate handling and use of medication.
  • Consulting with clinicians to ensure compliance with Standard Treatment Guidelines and the Essential Medicines List. Promoting rational medicine use and public health.
  • Supply relevant information to clinical staff. Be available to perform after-hour and on-call duties as per the requirements of the Pharmacy.
  • The procurement/ordering, acquiring, storage, packaging, repackaging, supplying & distribution of any medicine or scheduled substance in accordance with the Public Finance Management Act, National Treasury regulations, and Provincial Policies.
  • Monitoring availability of essential medicines and ensuring thermo-labile products are stored and handled according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Conduct cyclic counts and bi-annual stock-takes. Ensure safekeeping and security of stock, preventing losses & theft.
  • Ensure that Section 21 procedures for procurement are in place & followed correctly by health professionals.
  • Surveillance on medicine consumption of the department. Budget management & demand planning.
  • The compounding, manufacturing, manipulation, preparation or packaging of any medicine or scheduled substance or the supervision thereof.
  • Ensure implementation & compliance with standard operating procedures and statutory regulations (GPP, GMP, and PFMA incl. cost containment measures & AG requirements).
  • Recording scheduled substances in register, monitoring adherence and appropriate chronic use thereof.
  • Supervising Pharmacist Assistants on dispensing activities, stock orders, receiving, handling, storage, manufacturing, and pre-packing procedures.
  • Providing in-service training and registration as a tutor with SAPC for the purpose of training Pharmacist interns and Pharmacist Assistants.
  • Deputizing for the supervising pharmacist. Perform any other duty within scope of practice, including PMDS, leave management, and conflict resolution.
  • Be involved with continuous improvement projects to address service delivery challenges and ensure compliance with IHF prescripts.
  • Any other activities as delegated by the Pharmacy Manager.
