Job Description

Perform routine analytical techniques related to the established Sample Preparation and Fire Assay procedures.

  1. Preparation of samples for specific tests using the correct procedures and/or methods.
  2. Main work will consist of sample crushing, screening, milling, weighing, fluxing, and fusions.
  3. Analysis of samples for specific tests using the correct application programs.
  4. Assist with the maintenance and verification of instruments and apparatus.
  5. Must have workable knowledge to calibrate and perform minor maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  6. Tracking and collection of samples.
  7. Deliver samples with their Job card to the laboratory for analysis.
  8. Ensure that turnaround time is adhered to, for work specified in regard to general analysis.
  9. Assist with filing productivity documents at the end of each shift.
  10. Assist with recording and filing of all equipment records for quality purposes.
  11. Sample disposal.
  12. Record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration, and verification of instruments performed.
  13. To ensure that correct consumables and chemicals are used for analysis.
  14. Assist with changing of gas cylinders.
  15. Cleaning of the laboratory and immediate working area, including floors and equipment.
  16. Ensure that quality procedures are complied with.
  17. Ensure compliance with the Laboratory, company, and mine Health and Safety programs.
  18. Perform duties on all relevant workstations as required by the shift workload.
  19. Wait for the arrival of his/her relief at the end of the shift, to ensure smooth shift takeover.
  20. Shift takeover will only take place in the Laboratory building.
  21. Comply and conform to the QHSE policy of the company.
  22. Must comply and conform to the Quality Management System (ISO17025 and SANAS).
  23. Operators must be able to work in all departments of sample preparation and Fire Assay (rotation).
  24. Participate and form part of Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
  25. Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood.
  26. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  27. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
Qualifications
Education
  • Grade 12, with Mathematics and Science as subjects and/or proven years of laboratory knowledge, skills, and experience sufficient to be recognized as a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.
  • Knowledge of measurement, preparation, fluxing, and fusing of samples would be an advantage.
  • Must have a basic understanding of SLIMS.
  • Must be willing to work overtime whenever necessary (at least two weekends per month).
  • Must be flexible and willing to work shifts.
