This position is for our Geochemistry Laboratory situated in Rustenburg. The incumbent performs routine analytical techniques related to the established Sample Preparation and Fire Assay procedures.

Job Description
Perform routine analytical techniques related to the established sample preparation and fire assay, ICP and XRF procedures.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Receive samples with security guard and verify seal number on the trunks with those on the Way Bill and sign the waybill with the security guard.
2. Perform sorting and boxing of samples when samples are received.
3. Collect samples from Sample Receiving for weighing.
4. Perform weighing, drying and crushing of samples as required by the client’s instructions for sample preparation.
5. Perform splitting, pulverizing and boxing of samples in Sample Prep and do screen checks.
6. Perform the screening of samples for PSA.
7. Perform discarding of samples.
8. Perform the weighing, fluxing, fusion and cupelling processes within Fire Assay.
9. Discard samples to return to the client.
10. Perform pressing of powders for XRF analysis.
11. Perform wet chemical dissolution of samples.
12. Punctuality at all times.
13. Ensure customer requirements are achieved with regard to turnaround time commitments. Report daily production figures to the shift/team leader and also bona fide explanations about targets not met and status of equipment/consumables.
14. Follow immediate superior’s clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing the duties.
15. Perform housekeeping to ensure that the work areas and surrounding environment is kept clean at all times.
16. Comply and conform to the QHSE policy of the company.
17. Must have a basic understanding of SLIMS.
18. Must comply and conform to the Quality Management System (ISO17025 and SANAS).
19. Assist with the maintenance of the laboratory instruments and apparatus.
20. Must be willing to work overtime when necessary.
21. Operators must be able to work in all departments of sample preparation, Fire Assay, wet chemistry and XRF (rotation).
22. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.

Qualifications

• Grade 12, with Mathematics and Science.

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a laboratory environment.
• Previous knowledge of measurement, preparation, fluxing and fusing of samples would be an advantage.
