General Description

The main purpose of Professional Nurse Occupational Health is to provide quality medical occupational nursing care to all patients to establish their physical, psychological, and social well-being. Implement and conduct evaluation of programs designed to limit chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic risks to workers.

Occupational health care

1. Ability to carry out examinations and procedures in terms of the governing legislation for occupational health.
2. Conduct all types of medical fitness assessments: pre-employment, transfer, annual, and exit.
3. Report and assist with all injuries on duty and occupational diseases.
4. Assess the ability to work and the health status of clients.
5. Ensure medical records are recorded and signed.
6. Management and appropriate referrals of minor injuries on duty.
7. Provide a comprehensive Occupational Healthcare service.

Occupational Health Screening Procedures

1. Perform and interpret the screening test results.
2. Performance of spirometry, audiometry, vision screening, and highlighting significant abnormalities to the Occupational Medical Practitioner.
3. Engage in physical safety checks, interventions, and coaching junior staff members.
4. Report deficiencies and implement plans to address deficiencies.
5. Assess the 'fitness for duty' of team members and take any subsequent necessary action.

Administrative Knowledge

1. Good knowledge of the company’s policies and procedures as well as relevant legislation.
2. Keep medical equipment clean and well-maintained.
3. Assist with safety and First Aid programmes.

Minimum Required Qualifications

1. Grade 12.
2. Ability to communicate with customers/patients in English (other languages advantageous).
3. Diploma or Degree in Nursing.
4. BTech or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing.
5. Registered with SA Nursing Council and SASOHN (South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing).
6. Certificate in Audiometry, Spirometry, and Vision.
7. Basic Life Support certificate (advantageous).
8. Understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, and ISO/IEC 17020:201.

Knowledge

1. Medical Knowledge.
2. Knowledge of health and safety policies and procedures.
3. Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
4. Clerical - Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.

Experience Required

1. 2+ years' experience as an Occupational Health Nurse within the mining environment is preferable.
2. Administration and Record Keeping according to legal and ethical parameters.
3. Must have excellent people skills, writing, and administration skills.
4. Communication skills and critical thinking.
5. Must have a Driver's license and own transport.
6. Computer proficiency.
7. Certificate of Fitness.
