Job description

Cotlands is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) committed to creating access to quality play-based early learning experiences through toy libraries and early learning playgroups. We capacitate adults working with children and educate the parents of children on a variety of topics related to early childhood development.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator will be responsible for the design and implementation of a data collection and management system for the organisation. This position reports to the Chief Operations Officer.


Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • With the support of the Chief Operations Officer, establish monitoring and evaluation system
  • Implementation of the organisations M&E plan
  • Coordinate and assist monitoring and evaluation data collection activities, including logistics related to data collection and form distribution, as well as orientation and training of data collectors
  • Plan, coordinate and assist data processing, including data transfer, entry, verification and cleaning
  • Comply to all document and data management according to protocols
  • Coordinate internal communication on M&E progress and results
  • Coordinate and follow-up with project partners, temporary M&E employees, or consultants (i.e. data entry, etc.)
  • M&E database set up and management
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual reports as needed
  • Preparation of data collection tools as required
  • Dissemination of reports or related materials to stakeholders as needed
  • Preparation of M&E training materials and the provision of training as needed
  • Promoting collaboration on M&E events and issues with partner organisations and stakeholders
  • Other functions as needed

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or a related field, or equivalent, with 5-6 years of experience in monitoring and evaluation required
  • Master’s degree in social sciences or a related field, or equivalent preferred; with Master's degree, 3-5 years’ experience in monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience with donor-funded projects
  • Experience in data collection and data processing
  • Experience in development of assessment tools
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Ability to plan and organise events, trainings, and activities
  • Must be able to work within a cross cultural setting, negotiate diplomatically, and function well under pressure
  • Culturally astute, respectful and tolerant with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English, both written and verbal; additional South African languages preferred
  • Detail-oriented and organised
  • Good report writing skills
  • Budgeting skills for activity planning and management
  • Experience using database management systems, preferably Excel
  • Ability to work hands-on, independently, and within team in difficult work environment
  • Willingness and ability to frequently travel to areas covered by the organisation.

  • The ability to work independently and to adhere to deadlines
  • Effective communication skills – (written and verbal) including report writing skills.
  • Computer literate: Microsoft package, excel,
  • Prepared to travel long distances
  • Frequent business trips away from home
  • Own vehicle and driver’s license required
  • Established home office
