Job Description
The Microbiologist role is an entry-level position in the Microbiology lab.
This position works independently to perform routine sampling and process samples in support of the Quality department.
This position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.
Responsibilities
- Perform microbiological tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to detect and identify microorganisms.
- Glassware cleaning and sterilization
- Media weighing, preparation, testing and verification
- Preparation and maintenance of microbiological cultures and media for testing.
- Conducting environmental monitoring of processing areas to ensure they meet hygiene standards
- Accurately documenting and interpreting test results, ensuring timely reporting.
- Assisting in the development and validation of new microbiological testing methods.
- Maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.
- Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Performing sterility checks and analyses to ensure the reliability of test results.
- Safely managing biological waste and ensuring timeous collection and disposal.
- Regular laboratory stock counting and inventory monitoring and control
- Results counting and reports compilation and interpretation.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of microbiology principles and laboratory techniques.
- Familiarity with regulatory standards (e.g. SANS 241)
- Experience with aseptic techniques and contamination control
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Excellent time management skills
- Basic computer skills (Excel & Word)
- Ability to participate in and contribute to a team-oriented work environment.
