Job Purpose

Strategic enhancement of skillset of academics and researchers at CPUT. The RTCDU is mandated with facilitating the development and/or strengthening of the scholarly academic identities of researchers at CPUT. This means that the Unit has to enable researchers to complete higher degrees, particularly PhDs, publish their research in reputable journals, establish their research niches, find funding for their projects, establish partnerships for excellent research and funding purposes, and comply with all facets of academic citizenry.

The RTCDU’s mandate is executed through a series of workshops, writing retreats, fostering networks across disciplines, and sharing experiences of academics at various levels across the institution. The ultimate goal is to have a cadre of highly skilled and motivated academics who feel supported and valued by the institution and who would contribute to the institution’s envisaged higher number of staff with PhD qualifications, increased research output, skilled postgraduate supervisor resource base, and mentors for their colleagues.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A Doctoral degree in social or scientific sciences or equivalent
  • Five (5) years’ experience in staff capacity development
  • Higher Education experience is advantageous
  • Experience in managing the University Capacity Development Grant programme is desirable

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

1. Staff Development

  • Conduct strategic workshops and consultations
  • Support for writing-related activities including writing retreats and financial support for editing
  • Identify emerging challenges among academics
  • Continuous monitoring and evaluation of developmental programmes and initiatives
  • Manage supervision developmental programmes and initiatives
  • Plan long-term and short-term strategic skills development objectives
  • Conduct the skills audit

2. Mentorship and Partnership Programme

  • Career and transformation-focused programmes and initiatives
  • Create and establish partnerships and collaboration aligned with CPUT Vision 2030
  • Identify and disseminate funding, award, and advancement programmes
  • Promote and support transdisciplinary research focused on the CPUT Vision 2030

3. Office Coordination

  • Activity planning and execution
  • Completion of MIS information
  • Identify relevant material for training
  • Evaluate teaching and learning resources
  • Perform all administrative activities pertaining to training and development functions
  • Manage the training database, ensuring that the training plan, identified training courses, and presented courses are recorded
  • Compile statistical reports from the database
  • Ensure that decisions related to skills development and training are circulated to Deans, Directors/HODs, and Supervisors of Units

4. Financial Management/Training Budget

  • Draw up a budget for skills development in accordance with departmental and faculty skills plan
  • Monitor the budgetary expenditure throughout the financial year

5. Training Consultation

  • Advise senior management and HODs on matters relating to learning interventions and skills development processes
  • Ensure that key stakeholders participating in the skills development process are educated accordingly
  • Be available to staff to provide training advice in respect of career development

6. Project Management

  • Initiate projects related to training on behalf of the Department
  • Represent the University on external forums regarding training
  • Experience in staff development strategies
  • Some experience in monitoring and evaluation
  • Understanding of career stages
  • Strong management and leadership skills
  • Coordination and collaboration abilities
  • Knowledge of University policies and guidelines
  • Able to organize and manage sustainable mentoring and coaching programmes
  • Professional engagement
  • Understanding of institutional, national, and international developmental goals
  • Some experience as an NRF Designated Authority and NRF Connect
  • Good scientific research experience
  • Some understanding of the MIS (UCDG) reporting system
