LOCUM SENIOR VETERINARY OFFICER

Location: St Helena Island, South Atlantic

Contract: 2 months FTC for the period May to June 2025

Salary: £75k pa pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications plus international supplement

Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

Leading a local team of four; covering domestic animals, livestock and poultry for the general public and agricultural community; you will undertake regulatory aspects of animal imports and exports and veterinary biosecurity.

You must maintain professional networks and strong lines of communication regarding veterinary and livestock issues between the Environment, Natural Resources and Planning Portfolio’s Agriculture Section, livestock farmers, domestic animal clients, the St Helena Society for the Protection of Cruelty of Animals, the Environmental Health and Laboratory Sections of the Health and Social Care Portfolio, St Helena Customs and the media.

You will be responsible for the surveillance and monitoring of the disease status of the Island’s livestock and domestic animals. Your remit will also include the implementation and monitoring of the ENRP Animal and Apiculture Import and Export Health Standards (protocols), boarding ships and yachts and attending flights days at the Airport when animals are arriving at and departing the Island, and overseeing quarantine facilities. As you ensure the health and habitat of the island’s giant tortoises you will monitor the world animal disease situation.

Holding a degree in veterinary medicine and surgery plus a valid driving licence, your excellence in clinical acumen is supported by clinical work on farm and domestic animals. With knowledge or experience of livestock production systems, you have experience or willingness to train in AI and an understanding of agricultural and animal legislation.

Building relationships with a range of stakeholders and the community you should have strong communication, negotiation and diplomacy skills and the ability to plan, prioritise and control workload. You can confidently communicate with laymen, para-professionals, pet owners, Government officials, politicians and the media.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
