ACCOUNTABLE TO: Executive Head: Legal & Compliance

POSITION TYPE: Permanent

BENEFITS: In-house Medical Aid (50/50 contribution), Retirement Fund (50/50 contribution)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position entails maintaining and enhancing the legal strategy to ensure the company is provided with sound and professional legal guidance.

DUTIES / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Strong background in commercial and insurance law;
  2. Analytical and attentive to detail;
  3. Proven track record in providing effective legal counsel and developing contracts that mitigate legal risks;
  4. Serving as a legal resource and point of reference on legal and insurance matters, as well as rendering formal and informal legal opinions;
  5. Draft, negotiate and review agreements;
  6. Managing litigious matters on behalf of the company;
  7. Instruct external legal counsel on various matters;
  8. Sound understanding of relevant legislation and its impact on business strategy;
  9. Ability to identify and mitigate legal risks;
  10. Familiar with complaint handling process and corresponding with respective regulatory bodies;
  11. Interpersonally agile and strong at building relationships at all levels;
  12. Self-starter with the ability to work well independently;
  13. Ability to draft legal reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

  • Admitted Attorney;
  • Post Graduate qualification would be advantageous.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Financial services background incl. direct exposure to financial legislation;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience within Financial Services or Insurance sector;
  • Experience or knowledge in Compliance with a focus on TCF, POPI, CPA, FAIS, FICA;
  • Commercial law technical and drafting skills;
  • Interpersonal skills and strong character.

  • Good communication skills at all levels within the organisation;
  • Ability to effectively handle challenging situations;
  • Strong administrative skills;
  • Clean credit and criminal records;
