Job description

Lecturer Position: Emergency Medical Care Ref: 1731 and C202

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Care or equivalent
  • An undergraduate degree in Emergency Medical Care.
  • 3 years previous experience in teaching or training within a higher education setting, with a preference for candidates who have worked as teaching assistants, clinical instructors, or have facilitated workshops for students in emergency medical services.

Professional Registration and Certification:

  • Active registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner with the HPCSA
  • Current certification in advanced life support, such as ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) would be beneficial.

Clinical Experience:

  • A minimum of 2–5 years of clinical experience as an Emergency Care Practitioner with experience in pre-hospital emergency care and/or a hospital emergency department.
  • Evidence of clinical currency through demonstration of compliance with HPCSA CPD requirements. Current operational practice (part-time or full-time) as an Emergency Care Practitioner would be advantageous.

Teaching Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop course materials, deliver lectures, and assess student performance.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and mentor students effectively.
  • Familiarity with teaching/learning principles and instructional design for emergency care education.
  • Proficiency in educational technologies, such as learning management systems and simulation tools used in clinical education.

Additional Requirements:

  • A reasonable literacy level in information technology, and general use of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • A commitment to research or scholarly activity in emergency care education is desirable.

Summary of Duties:

  • Contribute to the research, design, development & review of teaching and learning strategies, curriculum development and institutional development policies, procedures, systems & instruments as required, in line with relevant quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Provide and facilitate teaching, learning and assessment in emergency medical care and rescue across all four years of the programme.
  • Develop learning material and course content, to ensure continuity in relevance and maintenance of quality.
  • Involvement in research activities.
  • Engage in continuous academic development.
  • Involvement in community engagement.
